Houston began singing at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. She was one of the first black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen after becoming a teen model in 1981. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at age 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. Hit singles from the albums, including "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", established her as a catalyst in the acceptance of black female artists on MTV. Her third studio album, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), yielded two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, the title track and "All the Man That I Need". Houston's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 received widespread media coverage.
Houston made her acting debut with the romantic thriller film The Bodyguard (1992), which despite its mixed reviews became the tenth highest-grossing film to that date. Its soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and remains the bestselling soundtrack album of all time. It generated multiple hit singles, including "I Have Nothing", "I'm Every Woman" and "I Will Always Love You"; the latter won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, spent a then-record 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling single by a woman in music history. Subsequently, she went on to star in the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996), and she recorded their respective soundtracks; the former scored her last Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", while the latter, produced by Houston herself, became the bestselling gospel album of all time. As a film producer, she produced multicultural movies and series such as Cinderella (1997) and The Princess Diaries and The Cheetah Girls.
Houston's first studio album in eight years, My Love Is Your Love (1998), spawned several hit singles, including the title track, "Heartbreak Hotel", "It's Not Right but It's Okay" and the Academy Award-winning Mariah Carey duet "When You Believe". Following the success, she renewed her contract with Arista for $100 million in 2001, one of the biggest recording deals of all time. However, her personal problems began to overshadow her career. Her 2002 studio album, Just Whitney, received mixed reviews, while her drug use and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown received widespread media coverage. After divorcing Brown, Houston returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her final studio album, I Look to You (2009). In February 2012, Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. News of her death coincided with the 2012 Grammy Awards, which took place the day following her death, and was covered internationally. Her life and career were dramatized in the 2022 biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Her assets amounted to $250 million, earned over a 25-year career.

Heaven, hear me now
I'm lost without a cause
After giving it my all
Winter storms have come
And darkened my sun
After all that I've been through
Who on earth can I turn to?
I look to You
I look to You
After all my strength is gone
In You, I can be strong
I look to You
I look to You, yeah
And when melodies are gone
In You, I hear a song
I look to You
About to lose my breath
There's no more fighting left
Sinking to rise no more
Searching for that open door
And every road that I've taken, mm
Led to my regret
And I don't know if I'm gon' make it
Nothing to do but lift my head
I look to You
I look to You, yeah
And when all my strength is gone
In You, I can be strong
I look to You
I look to You, oh yeah
And when melodies are gone
In You, I hear a song
I look to You
My levees are broken (oh Lord)
My walls have come (coming down on me)
They're crumbling down on me (all the rain is falling)
The rain is falling (woo)
Defeat is calling (set me free)
I need You to set me free
Take me far away from the battle
I need You
Shine on me
I look to You
I look to You
After all my strength is gone
In You, I can be strong
I look to You
I look to You, yeah
And when melodies are gone
In You, I hear a song
I look to You, yeah
I look to You, ooh
I look to You
In "I Look to You," Whitney Houston sings about turning to God for strength and guidance during difficult times. The opening lines "As I lay me down/ Heaven hear me now" set a spiritual tone, indicating a humble and reverent surrender to a higher power. The singer expresses feelings of being lost and adrift without a sense of purpose, even after giving it her all. The metaphor of winter storms darkening her sun suggests that she has gone through a season of hardship and suffering. She wonders who she can turn to on earth for help and resolution. The chorus repeats the title phrase "I look to you" as a mantra, a declaration of faith and reliance on God's support. The second verse describes reaching the point of exhaustion, feeling like there is no more fight left in her. She searches for an open door and regrets the past choices that have led her to this place of defeat. Again, the chorus emphasizes the message of finding strength and solace in God.

As I lay me down
As I rest and reflect on my life
Heaven hear me now
God or the divine being, please listen to me
I'm lost without a cause
I feel directionless and purposeless

After trying my best in everything
Winter storms have come
Difficult and challenging times have arrived
And darkened my sun
And made everything seem gloomy and dull
After all that I've been through
After experiencing everything that has happened to me
Who on earth can I turn to
I do not know who to rely on or trust
I look to you
I turn to you for guidance and support
After all my strength is gone
After I have exhausted myself
In you I can be strong
I can find strength and courage in you
And when melodies are gone
When everything sounds bleak and sad
In you I hear a song
In you, I find hope and inspiration
After losing my breath
After feeling breathless and overwhelmed
There's no more fighting left
I feel like giving up and surrendering
Sinking to rise no more
Suffering and unable to recover
Searching for that open door
Looking for a new opportunity or chance
And every road that I've taken

Led to my regret

And I don't know if I'm gonna make it
I am uncertain if I can overcome this
Nothing to do but lift my head
I have no other choice but to keep going
My levies have broken, my walls have come
I am emotionally overwhelmed and vulnerable
Coming down on me
Everything seems to be happening at once and overwhelming me
All the rain is falling
I am going through difficult times
Defeat is calling
Feeling like giving up
Set me free
Set me free from this pain and suffering

I be asking as well! This world, under the influence of Satan, is filled cruel hate!
Thank God this battle is not ours! We cannot bear our burdens alone.
Some bright morning when this world is oe'r I'll fly away!
To that home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away!
I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away!
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away!
Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away!
