Winter Is Coming
Winterfell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A chill wind returning, the winter is coming,
But still you ignore all the signs...
You live like a king, what will you pretend,
When decades of bounty come to an end?

When the snows fall,
And the white winds blow...
The lone wolf, shall die,
But the pack survives!

Whoa, seed of the throne, where do you go?
With all that you know, you walk from your hall.
The winter falls. The Hand of the King,
What truth shall you bring? (It Comes Again!)

When the snows fall,
And the white winds blow...
The lone wolf, shall die,
But the pack survives!

Cast out, unwanted, the Others will take you!
Head for the wall and the eternal night.
We′ve warned that the winter is almost upon you.
Run from it all, there is nowhere to hide...

Silent, fearless, they come for you!
Moving through darkness, sleepless and cruel.
Stare into eyes of your once dead friend,
This game of thrones has reached its end...

Now, follow me down, to where they were found,
But don't make a sound. The ages of old,
The secrets they hold. The stories were told,
Of Kings in the North (We Ride Again!)

Now the Snows fall,
And the white winds blow!
The dire wolves of winter.
This all was foretold!

Cast out, unwanted, the Others will take you!
Run from it all, there is no where to hide...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Winterfell's song "Winter is Coming" are full of intense imagery and passionate depictions of the impending winter and the dangers that come along with it. The song starts off with a warning that signals the coming of winter, but not everyone is paying attention to the signs. The singer points out that some people are living comfortably like kings, without understanding that the decades of bounty they have enjoyed are going to come to an end soon. This setup is important as it sets the tone for the rest of the song and acts as a call to arms for the people to prepare for the approaching snows.

The chorus of the song is very powerful, describing the coming winter in a daunting way, with the white winds blowing and the lone wolf dying, but the pack surviving. Here, the lone wolf could be seen as someone who tries to do things alone and not taking the others' help, but in the end, it is the pack that survives, emphasizing the importance of unity during the difficult times.

As the song progresses, the focus shifts to the power struggle in the world of the Seven Kingdoms. The chorus repeats, warning that winter is coming, but the lyrics start to emphasize the different factions and what they should do to survive it. The singer advises the "seed of the throne" to leave his comfortable home and to venture out to find the truth of what is happening in the world. The Hand of the King is also singled out as someone who should be prepared to face difficult truths that could arise.

The song's climax is when the singer warns of the Others' arrival and the need to head for the wall, a place where the eternal night looms over all. The Others are depicted as moving through the darkness, sleepless and cruel, coming to take out those who aren't prepared for the winter. The song ends with a final call to action, asking people to follow the singer to where the secrets of the ages are held and we ride again.

Overall, the song's lyrics are a warning of the impending danger to the Seven Kingdoms, with the coming winter being a metaphor for all that could go wrong. It is a call to action, urging people to prepare themselves mentally and physically for the difficult times ahead, and to come together to face the dangers that lurk in the dark.

When winter comes for war,
You shall hear no Lions roar.
When winter forces you to yield,
No Stags shall graze upon the field.
When winter creeps upon you from the shadows,
No Roses shall bloom from the meadows.
When winter wreaks havoc on the land,
You can bet there'll be no Snakes in the sand.
When winter brings to life all it finds grim,
The Krakens will freeze where they swim.
When winter sets and the land begins to shiver,
The Flayed Man will start to rot and wither.
When winter fights to the last sliver,
No more Trouts shall swim in the river.
When winter ravages and all despair,
No Falcons shall fly high in the air.
When winter shows you
what happens when snow falls,
not even dragons breath
shall warm you in your halls.
When winter comes
with all it's might,
only the Wolves
shall howl in the night!

WINTER IS HERE

@musicandlove516

So I'm about 10 years late to Game of Thrones. I know, blasphemy really. xD

But I was afraid. I tend to associate loss and grief in film and tv with my personal life... and I wasn't really sure I could handle it.

Until recently, when a horrendous chain of events outside of my control caused me to have to experience both grief and loss again, which really just reminded me of how often in life I have always lost and grieved. This time felt a little different in that I allowed stoicism to take over and grant me the peace I truly did need in order to heal through this process again, rather than letting it cut me open and fester like a raw wound.

I also really, really needed a distraction. Enter GoT.

Little did I know the impact the Starks of Winterfell would have on me.

I was born in the Spring. It never felt right. Always hated the heat, always hated my birthday. My mom had a tendency of ruining mine. I grew up in the Chilean Winter with my grandparents, who I would give anything to hug one more time. Winter allows me to sit comfortably in melancholy. I miss the feeling of crisp winter against my skin.

Wolves have always reminded me of the winter. As I've gotten older, I've started to feel a pull toward wolves. A significantly potent, spiritual connection to them. They are social, emotional, compassionate, and devoted to their loved ones... yet also guarded, and weary of others... much like me.

This soundscape encompasses whatever I'm trying to say here. It takes me to a place I wish I could be, but also helps me recognize the realities of mortality, and living in a realm filled with sadness and beauty all at the same time.

The night is dark and lonely, and it feels like the weight of the world is crushing down on my soul. The air is thick with an unbearable emptiness that seems to seep through my very bones. I am sitting in a chair, staring at a blank screen, waiting for a response that will never come.

The memories of my 10-year-old lover play on a loop in my mind, each one a dagger that tears through my heart. The love that once filled the room is now replaced with a numbness that chills me to the core. My eyes dart around the room, seeking solace, but all I find is a never-ending void.

The music playing in the background is a cruel reminder of the good times that are now gone. The notes of "Goodbye Brother" are full of sorrow and pain, each one a reminder of the happiness that is now out of reach. The melody is a lullaby that soothes my pain but also amplifies it.

I reach out for the Flux medicine, hoping that it will numb the pain, but it only serves as a temporary relief. The clock on the wall ticks on, but time seems to have lost its meaning. The night stretches on, an endless abyss of misery.

I am drowning in sorrow, suffocating in the emptiness that surrounds me. The room is a shell of what it once was, and I am a mere shadow of my former self. The night is a nightmare that I cannot wake up from, and I am left to face the agony alone.

Living in a small village in Norway, looking out the window, seeing the majestic mountains, small little fisherman houses, snow falling, listening to this soundtrack... It perfectly describes where I live.
