Leonard did not write this song. "Woke Up This Morning" is a song by Alabama 3 from their 1997 album Exile on Coldharbour Lane. The song was used as the opening theme music for the HBO drama series The Sopranos which used the "Chosen One Mix". Alabama 3 frontman Rob Spragg wrote the song after hearing about the 1996 murder case of Sara Thornton, who stabbed her husband after 20 years of abuse, mistreatment and neglect. If that isn't Leonard Cohen singing it's an EXCELLENT imitation. Either way it's a great song and the wonder behind all great songs/stories/poetry from T.S.Elliot to Leonard Cohen to Garbage(Stupid Girl) is that though the subject matter is the same and can be deemed as having been "ripped off" from one artist or another, it's simply the same idea/ thread sewn,woven, tied up or burned in a that particular artist's own unique manner. songsters draw from poets, poets draw from madmen,etc:GROOVY!

It's Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning (Detroit Mix). It was only ever released on a European maxi single disc in 1997 called Woke Up This Morning. The album had the EAN# 5023469004100, and had only 5 tracks on it in contrast to the American 6 track version, which DOES NOT contain this specific track on it. lol @ Leonard Cohen

here's the thing. when the show came out. we knew nothing about Alabama 3. yes Alabama 3 wrote and performed the song throughout the years, however when the show came out it was the name Leonard Cohen you heard about and yes he did sing the song

Yes, it is Alabama 3, aka "A3" (esp in the US; same kind of obnoxious IP lawyers who made The Beat call themselves The English Beat, & Yazoo call themselves Yaz -- or was it the other way round? -- in the States, because somebody else you never heard of had a similar name here). Be nice if whoever posted it here would fix the title of the page, he said -- hinting gently. Way too many people think Enya did "Adiemus" & Janis Joplin did "I Can't Stand the Rain" bcs of mistakes like this.
