Safeguards
Wolves At The Gate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These eyes have seen the joys yet suffered mind and body
Though still I'll sing, “How great Thou art!”

Calm my heart and give me still peace within my very soul
These eyes have seen the joys yet suffered mind and body
Though still I'll sing, “How great Thou art!”

When strength turns to crippled
I've learned to silence the world and listen
Blood staining Your footprints
For surely You went before this son
Through all the chaos and noise I’ve learned
I’ve learned to silence the world and listen
Still I’m singing of how great You are
For surely you went before this son
When safeguards turn captors
The haven never been seen so clearly
My constant delivers
All the surety that He hears me

How can I repay You Lord for this all-forgiving love?
For it's the sight of Christ upon the tree that surely
Will always still and humble me

Calm my heart and give me peace within my soul
How can I repay you Lord for this bounty of love?

You will not abandon me when this body sees decay
Grace and peace has made a home in this heart that it will stay
It will stay

For when my safeguards turn to captors
It will stay

Overall Meaning

The song "Safeguards" by Wolves At The Gate is a powerful and introspective track that delves into themes of hardship, faith, and gratitude. The lyrics speak of the trials that the singer has faced - both physical and mental - and how these experiences have shaped their faith. Despite this pain, the singer chooses to focus on the greatness of God and the love and mercy that they have received. The chorus repeats the phrase "How great Thou art," which is a line from a well-known hymn and serves as a reminder that no matter what hardships we face, God is always with us.

The second verse speaks of learning to listen to God's voice in the midst of chaos and despair. The imagery of blood on God's footprints suggests that He has walked the same path as the singer and understands their pain. The bridge continues this theme, with the singer humbly acknowledging their debt to God and the overwhelming love and forgiveness they have received.

The final lines of the song offer a powerful message of hope and faith, declaring that God will never abandon us even in the face of death. The repeated phrase "It will stay" suggests that the singer's faith is unshakeable and will endure even in the darkest of times.

Many groups who call themselves Christian, doesn't really speak of God in their song, perhaps by shame, or because they don't want to be cataloged. What this group makes, speaking about God, Jesus openly like that, I just find it wonderful. And see people who don't believe in god who listen to their songs still, well this is where we see that the mission is successful.

"You will not abandon me, when this body sees decay," I've been listening to this song for over a week now and that line has completely transformed my perception of God's Love for me. I can't even begin to describe it, LOL I know it sounds cheesy but xi feel deeply loved by God. I'd hope for the same for everyone else
