wheels
Wright Chely Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've made you mad as hell heard you yell
But I've never seen you crying
It's clear to us it's serious
We've never been this close to dying
We've gotten way too reckless baby
With this love I thought we treasured
If we keep on like this
We just might miss forever

Baby we never thought to swerve
It's like we drove straight into the curve
Baby we better hit the brakes and take it slow
And get these wheels back on the road

Why do I do what I do
When I don't know what I'm doin'
I can see the hurt from the words
That I'm throwing as they hit you
Why can't I just shut my mouth
And take some time to breathe
You'd think I'd know by now
To think before I speak

Baby we never thought to swerve
It's like we drove straight into the curve
Baby we better hit the brakes and take it slow
And get these wheels back on the road

Our first kiss was in the car
How'd we end up where we are
Broken down and worlds apart

Baby we never thought to swerve
It's like we drove straight into the curve
Baby we better hit the brakes
We better take it slow
And get these wheels back on the road

Get these wheels back on the road

Overall Meaning

In "Wheels," Wright Chely laments the reckless behavior that has endangered her relationship with her partner. She acknowledges that they have been too impulsive in their actions and words, leading them to the brink of destruction. She has caused her partner anger with her words but has never seen them cry, indicating the severity of their current situation. Wright Chely recognizes that they have both been careless with their love and if they do not slow down and take care, they could miss out on forever.

As the chorus repeats the metaphor of driving, she pleads with her partner to slow down and hit the brakes before it's too late to get their "wheels back on the road." She questions herself, asking why she continues to act recklessly when she's aware of the harm it can cause. Wright Chely admits that she can see the pain in her partner's eyes as she throws hurtful words their way. She wishes she could control her words and take the time to breathe before speaking.

In the third verse, Wright Chely looks back to the beginning of their relationship, remembering their first kiss in a car. She wonders how they ended up so far apart and broken down. As the song ends, she pleads with her partner again, urging them to hit the brakes and take it slow to get their "wheels back on the road."

I love the line, "you'll only miss the man that you wanted him to be". How true this often is.

After a miserable 13 years married to an alcoholic, I was even more miserable for a while after he left. It was that one line that really put things into perspective so I could start to heal. I didn't miss the life we had, I only missed the life I thought we could have had.

We should NOT judge people by who they love....rather, judge them by what they do in this world! Chely Wright is a beautiful, talented country singer. She was before she came out, she is now. Nothing about her music has changed. This video is the same now as it was when I saw it ten years ago. Chely, just keep on giving us great country music, and we'll keep loving you for it!
