For The Good Times
Wynn Stewart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't look so sad I know it's over
But life goes on and this old world keeps turning
Just be glad we had some time to spend together
There's no need to watch the bridges that were burning

Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft against my window
And make believe that you love me one more time for the good times

I'll get along and you'll find another
But I'll I'll be here if you'd ever need me
Don't say a word about tomorrow or forever
There'll be time enough for sadness whenever you leave me

Just lay your head upon my pillow

(For the good times) for the good times (for the good times)
Yes for the good times (for the good times) oh for the good times

Overall Meaning

Wynn Stewart's song "For the Good Times" is a classic ballad that speaks of a love that has come to an end, but the singer is urging his partner to look at the brighter side of things. He tells her not to be sad because life goes on and that they had a good time while it lasted. He goes on to say that there's no need to look back at the past and worry about the bridges that they have burned. He then paints a picture of a cozy scene where they can lay together and listen to the raindrops as they whisper against the window. The singer then asks his partner to pretend to love him one more time, just for the good times.

The song's lyrics reveal the singer's desire to console his partner, to ease the pain of their separation. He seems to recognize that it's a difficult time, hence the need for them to hold each other close and enjoy the moment they have together. However, he knows that they have to part ways at some point, and he reassures her that he'll be fine and that she'll find someone else. He wants her to live in the present and not worry about what the future may hold. He reminds her that there's enough time to be sad whenever she leaves him.

Good job, I especially like the chorus.

Wynn does a great version of this perennial favorite without it being overladen with the customary strings and things. It stands up to any other rendition that I've heard although the honors still go to Ray Price on this one.
