Round 'Bout Midnight
Wynton Marsalis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The opening line of the song, "It begins to tell 'Round midnight, midnight," sets the mood for a melancholy tale of lost love. The singer describes how he usually does well until after sunset, but come suppertime, he feels sad. However, it's round midnight when his memories of his past lover start to surface, and it gets really bad. The singer is haunted by memories that come alive in the silence of the night, and he hasn't got the strength to stand them.

The chorus of the song is a call for the singer's lover to return. He admits that his heart is still with her, even though they've quarreled and need to mend things. He wonders if their love is ending but pleads for her to stay. The imagery of angels singing for her return is powerful, and the singer longs for their love to be safe and sound again when "old midnight comes around." The song is a beautiful expression of the longing and heartache that comes with lost love and the desire to reclaim what was once good.

This was very early in Wynton's career and is on the All American Hero CD (an import). Art Blakey is on drums, Jimmy Williams on piano, Charles Fambrough on bass. I bought this CD in a used record store about 20 years ago.

This is a true Jazz master piece. Brutal !!!

Some really great playing here. Besides Wynton, who were the musicians and when(at least the year) was this recorded? Thanks

Trevy McDonald

Early 1980s. I met him at Book Expo back in 2001 when he was autographing his book Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life and had liner notes from all of the CDs by him I owned. He signed them all and commented that he was really young when this album was recorded.

Doesn't sound like Wynton's tone, but it is buttery and killa' nonetheless!!

I concur with Trevor McDonald. I made a copy of the All American Hero cd back in the 90's. Been looking for a copy ever since.
