Born and raised in Washington, DC, YahZarah started singing at the age of 7 in her church choir. Her love for performance began after winning a youth talent search at the Kennedy Center at age 10. After years of honing her talent in churches, talent shows and local concerts, she entered high school at DC’s prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Upon graduation in 1997, she was accepted to North Carolina Central University in Durham on a full scholarship to the school’s jazz program.
In 1998, she left NC Central and began touring as a background singer for Erykah Badu. While touring, YahZarah contributed background vocals and vocal arrangements to Badu’s platinum-selling “Mama’s Gun” LP, and was featured in the video for the album’s lead single, ‘Bag Lady.’ In 2001, she left the Mama’s Gun tour and released her debut album “Hear Me” on the KEO Music label. A follow up LP, 2003’s “Blackstar,” was issued on the Three Keys label and reached #44 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.
2004 found YahZarah reuniting with longtime collaborator and fellow NC Central classmate Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange) for a series of crucial guest appearances. With the release of The Foreign Exchange’s debut album “Connected,” YahZarah was featured on the lead single “Sincere.” The following year she appeared on Little Brother’s “Minstrel Show” LP (Atlantic Records), and was featured on the debut single “Lovin It.” She later contributed two vocal performances to The Foreign Exchange’s GRAMMY-nominated “Leave It All Behind” LP in 2008. That same year, she released an EP of new material entitled “The Prelude.” To support the EP, she toured nationally and internationally with artists such as Chaka Khan, Musiq Soulchild, The Roots, Rahsaan Patterson, and R. Kelly.
YahZarah’s latest album “The Ballad Of Purple Saint James,” is scheduled for release in May 2010 on the Foreign Exchange Music label.

To bury a relationship that won't die
Somehow it just keeps hanging on
You know I tried the best I could
But the truth is that I never ever ever
Could forget you
You seem to get the best of me
Never ever break free
From you
Why don't you release me let me go
If you don't love me tell me so
Cause I'll never ever ever walk away on my own
Hurts to much to be without you
As much as it hurts to be with you it's true
Your love is like Drugs
Your love is like drugs
Your just a heat seeking missal
Looking for a loving fool
Your love is like Drugs
Your love is like Drugs
And I'm so in love with you
I rather chase a lie it's true
Your a roaming, soaring Lion and you
never told a lie
You told me from the start that you had a traveling eye
But you also said you'd die for me
Said you'd always try for me
But I don't see where you are
What about me and my feelings
While you go out and do these things
Why you can't just be mine, my loves not just
Part time
Kicking and hollering and screaming
Telling you that I'm not leaving
Your love is like Drugs
Your love is like drugs
Your just a heat seeking missal
Looking for a loving fool
Your love is like Drugs
Your love is like Drugs
And I'm so in love with you
I rather chase a lie it's true
In Yahzarah's song "DRUGS," the lyrics explore the complex and tumultuous nature of a relationship that is toxic and addictive. The song begins with the singer acknowledging their struggle to let go of a relationship that seems to have a hold on them despite their best efforts. They express their inability to forget the person, admitting that this individual consistently brings out both the best and worst in them. The singer is trapped in a cycle of being drawn back into the relationship, unable to break free.
The chorus emphasizes the power and destructive nature of the love they share. Comparing it to drugs, the singer characterizes the love as a force that intoxicates and consumes them. They acknowledge the pain it causes to be with this person, but also the pain of being without them. The choice between staying and leaving is difficult, as both options bring their own form of suffering.
In the second verse, the singer describes the conflicting dynamics within the relationship. They portray their partner as a free-spirited individual, honest about their wandering eye. However, despite the partner's declarations of love and willingness to fight for the singer, the singer feels neglected and unseen. They question why their partner cannot fully commit and be present, leaving them feeling disregarded. The singer expresses their frustration and desperation, insisting that they won't leave and demanding attention and consideration.
Overall, "DRUGS" delves into the addictive and destructive nature of a toxic relationship. It explores the inner conflict and emotional turmoil experienced by the singer, torn between the overwhelming love they feel and the harmful effects of staying in the relationship.

One of the things I’ve ALWAYS loved about YahZarah is that she’s never been afraid to let her voice do what it’s supposed to do—SOAR. It’s literally like a bird, taking flight.
