The song was also recorded by Herman's Hermits, Humble Pie, The Greg Kihn Band, Nils Lofgren, Fleetwood Mac, Chilly and Graham Gouldman himself.
Gouldman wrote the song at the age of 19 while working by day in a gentlemen's outfitters near Salford Docks and playing by night with the semi-professional Manchester band the Mockingbirds. He said: "I was sleeping most of the time because I'd been gigging with the Mockingbirds the night before, and then during the day when I'd got any spare time I'd write in the shop. I used to shut up the shop at lunch time and sit in the back writing."
He said he was prompted to begin writing songs for the band out of frustration in finding new material. "We went down to Denmark Street and went round all the publishers trying to find a song . . . we didn’t get any songs that we liked or we weren’t given any songs period and the Beatles had started and I thought ‘well, I’m gonna really have a crack at song-writing.’ I had dabbled a bit, but they were really my inspiration and gave me and I think a lot of other people the courage to actually do it. We all wanted to be like the Beatles. I wrote two songs and the record company we were with turned down one of the songs. The song they turned down was 'For Your Love', which eventually found its way to the Yardbirds."
Gouldman's manager, Harvey Lisberg, was so impressed by the song he told Gouldman they should offer it to the Beatles. "I said, 'I think they're doing alright in the songwriting department, actually'," Gouldman recalled. Undeterred, Lisberg gave a demo of the song to publisher Ronnie Beck of Feldman's, who took it to the Hammersmith Odeon, where the Beatles were performing. By coincidence the Yardbirds were also performing on a Christmas show at the venue and Beck played the song to their manager, Giorgio Gomelsky, and the band.
In 1965 The Mockingbirds began a regular warm-up spot for BBC TV’s Top of the Pops, transmitted from Manchester. Gouldman recalled: "There was one strange moment when The Yardbirds appeared on the show doing 'For Your Love'. Everyone clamoured around them – and there I was just part of an anonymous group. I felt strange that night, hearing them play my song."
Despite the success "For Your Love" gave The Yardbirds, it signaled the departure of guitarist Eric Clapton, who played on the track with strong reluctance. Dismayed with the group's shift from R&B to pop, Clapton left the Yardbirds to join John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Speaking with Songfacts in a 2010 interview, Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty stuck up for the song. He said: "'For Your Love' was an interesting song, it had an interesting chord sequence, very moody, very powerful. And the fact that it stopped in the middle and went into a different time signature, we liked that, that was interesting. Quite different, really, from all the bluesy stuff that we'd been playing up till then. But somehow we liked it. It was original and different."
The song was featured in the 1998 film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and in the 2009 film The Boat That Rocked.

For your love
I'd give you everything and more and that's for sure
(For your love)
I'd bring you diamond rings and things right to your door
(For your love)
To thrill you with delight,
I'd give you diamonds bright
Make you dream of me at night
For your love
For your love
For your love
For your love,
For your love
I would give the stars above
For your love,
For your love
I would give you all I could
(For your love)
(For your love)
I'd give the moon if it were mine to give
(For your love)
I'd give the stars and the sun for I live
(For your love)
The Yardbirds’ hit song “For Your Love” is a love ballad that expresses the lengths to which the singer is willing to go for the one he loves. The repeated refrain of “For your love” sets the tone for the entire song and is indicative of how deeply he is devoted to his lover. The singer makes grandiose promises to his beloved, promising to give her everything he possibly can in order to make her happy. From diamond rings and delightful thrills to the stars and the moon, he is willing to go to any lengths to ensure her happiness.
The lyrics also contain a bit of clever wordplay, with double entendres such as “Double takes I will excite” and “Make you dream of me at night.” In these lines, the singer is not only promising to excite his lover, but also to make her think about him constantly, even in her dreams. The inspiration for the song reportedly comes from the experience of one of the band members who fell in love with a woman while in New York City.

that is SO many bands....
i have said in the past... "these people get together... say what needs to be said..... and then leave"
.
like the ORIGINAL alice cooper band.... before Alice went "solo"
their first album even confused frank zappa LOL (and its honestly pretty bad.... unless you are in the mood for it.... same with the meat puppets first album)
.
but "easy action" to "killer"...... AMAZING records
.
.
.
coopers "easy action" is still REALLY quite strange..... not the rock and roll he got famous for
but it still damn fun to listen to
.
.
.
.
anyway.... back to the point
ya.... these bands from.... "say what needs to be said"...... and then break up
and these shorter lived bands usually have the most "ah-ha!" moments for me
.
like AH-HA!!! thats how to make that guitar sound
or AH-HA!!! thats how ive felt all these years.... but i could never explain it
ETC
ETC
.
.
.
and while i (clearly) love alice cooper
after the "OG band" broke up..... you can really see that Alice was just following trends
and is STILL doing that today
.
the OG bands music was unique (even psychedelic AF!! on some tracks)
but "solo alice" is just a trend chaser
.
.
and again, i love Alice cooper.... he is an AMAZING human being (kind, thoughtful, ETC)
but his music kinda stinks
.
a few good songs on each new record.....
but i cant listen to ALL the songs like i could on "love it to death"........ or even "easy action" (which is still first album strange, but refined)

As a High School age musician, one of the first paying gigs we had was a wedding reception. The Bride and Groom requested "For Your Love" as their first dance. We said "sure, we can do it". We didn't consider that the couple wanted to dance slow to the BALLAD "For Your Love"! No, instead we blasted headlong into the Yardbirds song. To that couple, all these years later, if you're still together.......I'm SO sorry!
@MrBumperlover
Fucking hilarious.

This gem of a song reminds me the time when I was cruising down Route 66 in a 1952 MG TD Roadster with my blonde kitty wife...
Then I woke up and realized I was born in 1985 and was alone in my bed...
@johngolofit1208
I can still recall when I first heard this song as a 9 year old. It was in June of 1965 and I was in the passenger side of a Comet manipulating the radio dial as we were driving south on old Ohio route 8. I stopped when I heard this and a memory was set in my neuronal pathways. At that time I didn’t know who was singing nor did I care. It just sounded cool and good. Now, over 58 years later, it still does and will. Memories…
