West Coast
ZHU & Lana Del Rey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can see my baby swingin'
Ooh baby baby bae, I love you
I can see my baby swingin'
Ooh baby baby bae, I love you
I can see my baby swingin'
Ooh baby baby bae, I love you
I can see my baby swingin'
Down on the West Coast they got a sayin'
"If you're not drinkin' then you're not playin'"
But you've got the music, you've got the music
In you, don't you?

Down on the West Coast, I get this feeling like
It all could happen, that's why I'm leaving
You for the moment, you for the moment
Boy blue, yeah you

I can see my baby swingin'
I can see my baby swingin'

Down on the West Coast, they got their icons
Their silver starlets, their Queens of Saigons
And you've got the music, you've got the music
In you, don't you?

Down on the West Coast, they love their movies
Their golden gods and rock and roll groupies
And you've got the music, you've got the music
In you, don't you?

I can see my baby swingin'
I can see my baby swingin'

You push it hard, I pull away, I'm feeling hotter than fire
I guess that no one ever really made me feel that much higher

Te deseo, cariño, boy, it's you I desire
Your love, your love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "West Coast" by ZHU and Lana Del Rey display a strong admiration for the lifestyle found on the west coast of the United States, specifically in California. The song opens with Lana crooning about her love for someone: "I can see my baby swingin', Ooh baby baby bae, I love you." The repetition of these lines emphasizes her affection and also creates a dreamy, romantic atmosphere. The chorus then repeats this line before leading into the main message of the song.

Down on the West Coast, the song explains that people love to drink and have fun because "If you're not drinkin' then you're not playin'." However, the singer reassures the listener that they don't need alcohol to have a good time because "you've got the music in you." The verse then shifts back to the singer's love interest, explaining that they push and pull, but the love and desire between them is strong: "You push it hard, I pull away, I'm feeling hotter than fire. I guess that no one ever really made me feel that much higher."

The song also touches on popular icons associated with the West Coast, such as its silver starlets and Queens of Saigons. These references add to the romanticized nature of the song, highlighting its admiration for this way of life. Overall, "West Coast" is a love song to the idealized lifestyle and culture found in California.
