Grandma's Garden
Zac Brown Lyrics

She always had a way with things that grow
She'd be out there early in the springtime
Just as soon as she was sure it wouldn't snow
She said, I like to watch the seeds I've planted
Grow up into what they ought to be
I thought she was talking about tomatoes
Grandma's garden, it grew up strong
'Cause she weeded out whatever could go wrong
She would say, the straight and narrow is the toughest row to hoe
Just remember what you reap is what you sow
Grandma's love is what made Grandma's garden grow
I went to church last Sunday morning
The same one she attended sixty years
They asked me if I'd say some words about her
And I got up fightin' back tears
And I said, I used to watch her rack the rocks out
And tie up every vine with love and care
That a little piece of gramma taught me some lessons
And without her I'd never have a prayer
Grandma's garden, it grew up strong
'Cause she weeded out whatever could go wrong
She would say, the straight and narrow is the toughest row to hoe
Just remember what you reap is what you sow
Grandma's love is what made Grandma's garden grow
Grandma's garden, it grew up strong
'Cause she weeded out whatever could go wrong
She would say, the straight and narrow is the toughest row to hoe
In the garden of the Father now she's home
Grandma's love is what made Grandma's garden grow
Grandma's love is what made Grandma's garden grow
Zac Brown's song, Grandma's Garden, is a tribute to his late grandmother's passion for gardening and the life lessons she taught him through it. In the first verse, Brown reminisces about his grandmother's love for gardening, and her meticulous attention to her plants. He admired her ability to watch the seeds grow and was impressed by how she nurtured every plant like it was a part of her family. As the verse progresses, he realizes that his grandmother was talking about her family, not just her garden.
In the second verse, Brown talks about attending his grandmother's church, where he was asked to speak about her. He recalled the memories of his grandmother raking the rocks out and tying up vines with love and care. This is where he learned some valuable lessons from her that he would never forget. Without her nurturing guidance, he believes that he would never have a prayer.
The chorus of the song is all about Grandma's garden. The garden was an example of her love, and it grew up strong because of her deep-rooted care. She weeded out whatever could go wrong and would always say that the straight and narrow is the toughest row to hoe. She taught her family to remember that what you reap is what you sow. The song ends on a touching note, acknowledging that Grandma is in the garden of the Father now.

I first heard this song on June 15th 2022 when our grandson sent it to me as the song he wanted to dance with his Nana at his wedding. On the 19th they did just that. On the 22nd she suffered a massive stroke and never recovered. On the 25th we made the decision no one should ever have to do to remove her from life support. She was an organ donor and did help other people. This song was also used as the lead song on the tribute video the funeral home put together for us. She was just 63. We had been married almost 36 years.š¢

I played this song for my grand-dad yesterday. We lost grandma 6 years ago to a long battle with Pancreatic cancer. She was only 64. It hit the family hard and we all miss her every day. We try to honour her memory whenever we can. I wish she got to meet my son, wish we had more time to connect. She would spend hours out in the garden and it was beautiful, just like her.

The world would be a much better place if everyone remembered their grandmas and mothers with this conviction.Ā Miss my mama.Ā She would beat me out to the garden early in the morning.Ā She was there before I could get out and she lived at least 8 miles from me.Ā Appreciate your sweet grandmas.Ā They will not always be here to pray you out of trouble and keep you from making mistakes.Ā Love you mama.Ā Ā I know you have the prettiest garden in Heaven!
