Zutons (The) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well sometimes I go out by myself
And I look across the water
And I, think of all the things
What you're doing
And through my head I make a picture

'Cause since I've come on home
Well my body's been a mess
And I miss your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over
Valerie, Valerie

Did you have to go to jail
Put your house on up for sale?
Did you get a good lawyer?
I hope you didn't catch a tan
I hope you find the right man
Who'll fix it for you
Are you shopping anywhere
Changed the color of your hair
Are you busy?
And did you have to pay the fine
You were dodging all the time are you still dizzy?

'Cause since I've come on home
Well my body's been a mess
And I miss your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why wont you come on over
Valerie, Valerie, Valerie, Valerie

Well sometimes I go out by myself
And I look across the water
And I, think of all the things
What you're doing
And in my head I make a picture

'Cause since I've come on home
Well my body's been a mess
And I miss your ginger hair
And the way you like to dress
Won't you come on over
Stop making a fool out of me
Why won't you come on over

Overall Meaning

The Zutons' song Valerie is about a man who has just come back home and is missing his former lover named Valerie. He goes out by himself and looks across the water, imagining what Valerie is doing and constructing a picture in his head. He asks Valerie to come back to him and stop making a fool out of him. The song also explores the different scenarios that might have happened to Valerie, such as going to jail, putting her house up for sale, getting a good lawyer, and changing the color of her hair. The singer hopes that Valerie finds the right man who can fix everything for her.

The emotion in this song is palpable, and the lyrics are relatable to anyone who has been in a similar situation. It's a universal story of heartbreak and longing, and the upbeat tempo of the music contrasts with the melancholic lyrics, creating a unique sound that is both emotional and danceable.

+Michelle Herrera It would be like comparing Toots & The Maytal's Monkey Man to Amys... or the Clash's.... or Reel Big Fish's.

Original is the slowest,
Amy's is the most upbeat,
RBF is the fastest/hardest,
Clash's is the grimiest (i think its produced at a lower quality but it gives it a distinct 'live' sound)

I'll have my own favourite of the different ones, but would never say one is 'better' than the other.

I had listened to the Amy version a LOT over the past couple years, this is the first time I actually looked for the original.. and I'm surprised at how much I do like it despite it sounding SOOO different. Still probably prefer the Amy version, but that's just blatant homer-ism on my part... this version is still pretty kick ass!

Yo you excited for the new album?

I get goosebumps thinking about it. No lie I am not joking I cannot wait. Their new single hit the marks. I think they still got it as a 3 piece with studio musicians

@hortonremstead2115

This song was a big hit in the UK and Amy loved it too, made a cover and made everyone who loved this song love her more in the process.

@carinedemolin5720

Absolutely. I prefer this one but I'm not offended by Amy's version. No one goes around moaning the Whitney's I will always love you is a cover are they?

@VNeilson100

Don’t worry. Nobody likes the British.
