I feel like that bass distortion is unacceptable, nearly to the point of it being a deal-breaker at any price. No powered speaker should exhibit that problem, even if it means just lowering the top volume.

it depends on how loud its was ? i mean you can turn up every speaker + amplifier and make it sound shit. noone ever turns the knob to the max, reason is headroom.... if you got a recoding you like and is to low you can adjust the amplification. if it would sound ok whenever you up the volume to max... that means you miss out on max volume when using a recording that is less loud... try to put your stereo up max and see how many speakers (drivers) you might need to replace.

the bass disctortion could be due to any pre EQ from the Bluetooth source. If it reaches it's advertised decibel rating, it doesn't need to do it at maximum knobbage.

Turn the BT source volume down, increase knob volume, fixed.

I work in retail and we had those speakers. People just weren't sure what they'd do with them. They weren't a TV speaker, they weren't a portable speaker. So most passed them by. They ended up clearencing down to fifteen bucks before we finally ran out.

So if other stores had the same experience, that might be why you find so many for cheap online.

I actually have this speaker. It's a nice little unit, although the one big complaint that I have with it is that the internal pre-amp is absolutely attrocious compared to a proper amplifier. I had to go buy a separate pre-amp to use my turntable with it so that it didn't sound awful.

I purchased a Klipsch The Threes a couple of years ago. It's the upgraded version of this one. It also has a phono preamp (which is why I bought it) as well as wifi and aux and a few other upgrades. I've been very happy with its sound quality as well.

I had the exact same Technics record player when I was much younger, was part of a whole hifi system my brother carried back from Japan. I used to watch it switch tracks just for fun because I thought it was so fascinating. This channel really feels so nostalgic to me.

Klipsch is really a special brand. Their most popular (passive) speakers are being sold at quite crazy discounts every now and then, yet they are worshipped by seemingly everyone owning them. A little gem if you ask me.

I had one of those Technics close-and-play turntables in the late 70's, although mine was a simpler model with fewer controls. It's one of those pieces of equipment that would be fun to still own now. The distortion levels on the One did remind me of the old tabletop radios I had in my room after The Beatles broke in the US.

I bought one of these for US$290 in Australia. All I can say is if you listen to more old school sophisticated music it is a million times better than a Sony or JBL for the same price. In Australia, we don't have a great range to choose from. Blasting Jimi Hendrix and Mahavishnu Orchestra at full volume sounded great. You just need to find the right EQ setting for you on your I-Phone. It works well with I-Phone I-Tunes.

I have looked at these for a while as a possible speaker to spruce up the sound from my "home office" desktop computer, though I prefer the matte black version. Coincidentally I was looking at it just yesterday and it was listed on Amazon US for $149.99; at the moment it is $201.13. Must be the Techmoan effect! Good to know from the other comments that it might be available very cheap from some other sources.

I have a pair of "the Fives" from Klipsch, got them because they are active speakers with a phono preamp and works pretty well instead of a sound plank.
Pleased with the sound (after a firmware upgrade and new bass cut setting), and they look quite good as well.

Like others here, the limited volume, wobbly knobs, and that bass distortion are deal breakers for me. It might have been a nice living room addition but for its problems and I think for 300 quid I would rather get another pair of Ruark Audio MR 1s, those powered speakers are awesome little things, especially if you get them stood on the right material

I personally enjoy the nice, rich sound coming from this one. Perhaps it could've used a tone knob, as Techmoan suggested, but it's still quite a surprise to me. Granted, I listen to a lot of punk, grunge, and britpop, so I'm not so sure it would work as well as the modern jazz being played here.

Also, I've seen cheaper Klipsch The One II speakers at Wal-Mart, and other places like that.

I went up one “size” and purchased the equally confusing named Three II. I caught it on sale for $330 and it adds connection options along with a larger speaker arrangement. The sound is great for its size.

I was wondering if you could compare this speaker with the huawei sound x, or the smaller one, the huawei sound. I remember Klipsch being purely associated with seriously expensive horn loaded speakers and I'm slightly saddened to see them marketing low cost tat. But companies get purchased and the direction changes. I guess you can say the same about HP - who once were the most disruptive company in the electronics test and measurement field. They started with a solid business that everyone wanted to work with, expanded their activities, got taken over by bean counters and have totally lost their way having sold off their T&M business and the company I work for now own a lot of the timing products that HP were renown for. Turnover with a minimum amount of investment is the current way. I know I'm being a miserable bar steward.

One product I'd like to see Matt review is the Bose Companion 50. I have a setup in my home office fed from a Chord Hugo2 / Raspberry Pi with an SP/DIF hat running as a Roon end point and for the cost they are totally amazing.

that is true about HP assuming your talking about Hewlett Packard, granted while HP is nowhere near where they once were they did spin off some other their assets like Keysight which makes some pretty hardcore components for testing and measurement, but lets also be honest, HP wasnt the only one to loose their way, IBM basically invented the PC the way we know it today being microsoft operating system and Intel X86 processors, and they made what was probably the toughest yet quality line of laptops in the ThinkPad and yet they are gone, no more PCs with big blues badge anymore... and even dell has lost it, i have a dell inspiron from 2005 that is heavy made of metal and could probably knock someone out without even breaking a sweat, yet my inspiron that i have for work now has a wonky power port thats all loosey goosey and the USB port on one side malfunctions when you lift the computer off a desk, keep in mind that laptop has never been dropped or kicked and unless its sitting on a desk its in a laptop bag, its quality is just so low that even that kind of treatment was enough to damage it.

I have had a couple of Lenovo Thinkpads and have had problems with compatibility with USB ports on both the dock and the machine itself - these are most likely to be software / firmware issues. I guess everyone is trying to increase profits at the cost of quality.

HP was such a disruptive company. The company I work for has by acquisition now got a lot of the timing products that were originally HP developed and it's just wonderful stuff. It just seems a shame that a company that was formed from test equipment completely divorced itself from that market. I have watched so many HP test equipment repair videos and the quality of the stuff was off the scale.

I fully get that we live in a different world today of amazing pieces of test equipment based on DSP and cutting edge microwave voodoo - I've used some in the US labs and the sheer power and functionality of these things (we use a lot of LeCroy) is mind-blowing. But to enjoy the seer beauty of the older stuff is just wonderful.

I think having a external power brick also saves on production costs for the speaker unit, if it was internal the unit would have to be earthed and whole thing PAT tested or equivalent. External psu's are double insulated and so all that costly hassle is avoided.

Not all internal supply systems have to be grounded, if they are double insulated and the power board is kept separate from the logic board and only gives isolated low voltage to the login board then its essentially the same as using an external PSU

They recently got bought out by infinity and Harmon karden and I believe Denon is in that family. There was a time when you could put klipsch up against any speakers in the world. They do still have some series that are very good but they aren't the same anymore. They have introduced mass production into their products. I think that's the biggest problem. It used to be that everything they sold for the most part was handmade.

well that sad part about that is that it means that all those others have had failures in quality too, i remember infinity sounding really good and ive got some denon stuff from the mid 80s to the early 90s that is just high quality too, but klipsch for me has been falling down for a while now, kinda like altec lansing, they used to make high quality but the prices were so darn high that the head honchos realized they would make more if they brought quality down and just relied on quantity instead...

Even on my iPad the klipsch sounds richer but no less detail, the regular speakers sound tinny and cheap in comparison. I would rather have a more mono presentation but better sound quality than stereo but tinny sound so the klipsch wins for me.
Knobs aside I am very impressed with the build quality inside and that middle speaker has a pretty big magnet!

If you reversed the wires to one of the HF speakers it will put it out of phase with the other HF driver. This would most likely create the impression of a wider acoustic sound stage. If you wanted, you could put a DPDT switch on the back of the speaker to turn the effect on and off as your mood swings.

I have a similar Klipsch speaker for my bedroom. It has a google home assistant in it but I think the speaker layout is the same. I have it placed diagonally in a corner, about two feet in front of where the walls come together and it really does get better separation in that position. The ports on the side are passive membranes. it is as you report - just loud enough to make a listenable sound in a single room, but not overpowered. It used to be the speaker for my television before I got a soundbar but now it's used for google stuff and music. It fits the purpose.

I own the model Three II and it comes with a remote control. It also adds a USB input. I use mine as a computer speaker. I never realized there was a protective sheet over the emblem so thanks for the heads up.

Love this channel. Although the Harman Kardon Aura Studio 3 is a bluetooth speaker (with ambient light) that was released a little while back I really think it would fit in here. I got it on a whim and it's now one of my most used devices. We have it in our bedroom and have gotten so used to the light that we keep it on all night. And it looks cool. I won''t get into details here but more than anything it sounds great!

I received the one 2 phone for around $100 and feel its more than fair. I have much better speakers as a reference but, I like relative simplicity of it. again, the problems with bass response as well as a decent mid range and highs is acceptable at $100.

I actually bought this unit last year. I loved the retro look, I needed something for a small room, and it's Klipsch . . . what could go wrong, right? Broke it in with about four days of listening, off and on, etc. It just never got better than, blah. Imagine listening to a live concert from outside the building and you'll be in the ballpark of what the sound is like. I really wanted to love this unit, but after 5 days I sent it back. I really expected a lot more from the likes of Klipsch and was really quite surprised that a company with such a stellar reputation would offer this inferior equipment to its customer bass. I realize that it is relatively inexpensive and made in China, but if you're Klipsch then why bother?

Money... thats the reason klipsch of today isnt the same as what they were even20 years ago, they realized that most of the public want sound bars, small desktop speakers and surround sound in a box systems over high quality speakers that need an amplifier or receiver, it always kinda annoys me when people go oh its this company i expected more because of the shit they made 40 years ago, well dont even the others dont do that, like sony, they created standards back in the day we have them to thank for stuff like CD (mostly philips) and Blu -Ray but now sony is totally happy with making decent quality generic and following the standard instead of creating the standard.

I think the sound is ok so far ... but with all those little shortcomings and also a very limited number of usecases i don't think that thing would be worth anywhere near 200-300 bucks for me ... maybe around half of that would be accaptable.
I think there are other options which are ending up more versatile in that pricerange ... like powered speakers and a budget standalone preamp could do as good or maybe better ...
Of course i like the esthetics of that speaker a lot ... but i dont like that trend of selling rather mediocre devices in a nice design and packaging for a premium price ... as long as it isn't the most ugly/creepy design in the world i rather care about funcional value ...

I bought for our caravan something very similar to this, much cheaper (Argos’s Bush) Bluetooth speaker, surprisingly it sounds quite well it also has a separate Bass And Treble controls, it has a big flip switch for on/off it is mains and battery, it also goes quite loud and deep to my surprise.

Klipsch was legendary for their large super-efficient Klipschorns and some smaller products, but they were bought by Audiovoxx in 2011. I see none of Klipsch's specialized horn loading tedhniquess inside that unit (perhaps hidden inside those metal bells?) so I suspect this is an example of Audiovoxx using the Klipsch name to market this product.

On the other hand, Klipsch was adamant about maintaining efficiency, so maybe the internal matching network is optimized for a different type of cartridge than the one you used. A possible fix is an L-pad to attenuate the input signal a bit to use the entire volume potential of the speakers without adding distortion.

I got one of these for my girl friend. she's never had a speaker nicer than a laptop speaker. It's got a much nicer sound than what you hear in the video for sure. If this is the form factor you want it's a good choice at a discounted rate.

Personal opinion of course, here, but I've always felt that while Klipsch have made amazing speakers, nearly all amplifiers they have produced inside their products are questionable at best. Their USB headphones for example sounded good... with the exception of the horrible hiss that was ever-present. The speakers on display here sounding fine at a moderate volume, but the woofer distorting at higher volumes? Seems they haven't really learned much in this space. Thanks for the review!

I love Klipsch products. I have kind of a soft spot for the company. I have a set of '95-'96 KG 3.5s that work amazingly in my setup. Big fan of the brand, wish I could afford to try out their newer products. But my floor standers are way more than enough for my current needs.

Wouldn't beleive I scored one of these at my local Walmart in the US. I'm assuming it was a returned online order and never opened but it was marked down all the way to $10.00. Great sounding speaker in person video doesn't do it too much justice. Klipsch makes great products.

I used to have a Goodman's 'Sound Base' on top of a CRT cabinet and it would interfere with the picture so when I decided to get some shielded speakers I needed an amp of some kind. They're quite expensive on their own so I ended up dismantling the sound base and using its board for that purpose. I had to put the power supply in a different box but it's been going strong for over a year now!

I might buy this speaker at a discounted price but not more. The stereo separation is not very noticeable. The sound is like that of an old tube desktop radio, warm and fine but still limited in dynamic range. The Bluetooth music you played, all synthetic instruments, sounded almost exactly like the narrow band sound heard in my 1913 Victor Victrola. I think Klipsch did themselves a disservice in branding this with their logo. It clearly leaves me wanting more.

The speaker drivers themselves are fine in the unit, however I believe there is a problem with the design. What I believe it needs is a bass port, a hole in the back, which helps with bass dynamics.

I have a 70's am/fm tuner with with component record player and 8 track. It's all running through a RCA to 8mm adapter plugged into the headphone jack. The speaker is a Bose wave radio and it sounds fantastic.

I have the bigger brother, The Three. I was quite impressed with the sound of that. It is warm and bassy, and it feels my small living room quite well. I think they use the same controllers on mine as the ones, and I have three more inputs I can use: Wi-Fi, USB and Aux. So it makes more sense to cycle through them. It also came with a remote. If I didn't have a stereo system already hooked up to my computer, I would gladly use the Klipsch for that.

I bought mine in 2019, and it was great to have when I had to work from home after the pandemic hit. Nothing quite like working with my favourite music blaring and nobody around to complain about it. I don't have that much space, so I am looking for a place saving record player. I did connect a regular record player to it, but that took up valuable space, so I have to look for placesaving things. Would love the vertical Sony record player, but that is insanely expensive...

Klipsch really does make very good products for not too much money, I'm not sure about their earbud offerings as those look like they could just be private labeled products but their speaker range is very good.

@Shaun Stephens You're quite right, I should have added a word like options or formats into that for the sake of semantics.

Of course, a DSP is doing what was done in the 80s with low-pass filters and transistors to boost the bass, but I was referring to all kinds of pseudo-surround stuff with their licensing logos emblazoned everywhere as is so common these days.

@The Bigger Byte A DSP is just taking a digital signal and processing it, not all DSPs even handle Analog audio as that can basically just be passed to the amplifier. I know what your saying and i know that devices nowadays will say DSP when they technically mean is Audio SOC, but in this case the DSP wouldnt even be touching the line level inputs because those are already analog, and they also had DSPs in the 1980s they had to for CD players and the like to work.

It sounded like mixed mono to me. Even when you popped open the case, I still only heard mixed mono. But that's fine - both speakers were in the same general area and I'm used to stereo speakers being apart enough to be very noticeable.

What I don't understand is a lot of the younger generation doesn't understand what stereo really is and they will go to Walmart or Sam's and spend a lot of money on a Bluetooth speaker for their phone and it will sound like a overpriced am radio because their is no stereo sound.

My definition of the Roth speakers would not be that they are "harsh" as you suggested, they just sound very thin by comparison. In other words, they are lacking in the lower frequencies. I know it's not possible to get an accurate gauge of the true sound over YouTube just using a camera mic but that's my take listening with high end gear. I would buy the Klipsch either, phono pre-amp or not.

Late to this party, but interesting. I'm thinking of messing around with some old turntables but my amp set up is far away from my 'working' desk. This would be good for a quick and dirty test. I also have several of those Technics decks (went a bit overboard a few years ago) and this would be a good pairing too.

The prices in the US are kind of weird.
Depending on the color, you pay between $109 and $200 on Amazon from the official Klipsch store.
And then there is the one without phono pre-amp but seems otherwise identical which is $180.

These were sold on Snap-on tool trucks last year as a promotion. I say sold, but it was more like 'spend x amount on tools, get this free' deal. Listening to it on the truck, is was somewhat impressive for its size, albeit a tad flat on the top end and too thick on the bottom. Like the loudness button was permanently on. As long as you weren't over expecting, it's a respectable sounding box.
What I did not know was the $300 price tag. Honestly, I think $150 is a gracious plenty... especially considering that I noticed the same thing: at about 1/2 volume, the woofer is just about at the limit of its ability to keep up with the lofty expectations of the equalisation (that can't be adjusted) they seem to have used for the unit.
It is nice looking, though.

A more costly version of this same speaker is one with the Snap On Tool logo added on to it. A few months ago my Snap On Tool rep tried his best to sell me one for $600.00. It was the next model up (The One III). It has a wireless remote, and USB in and out. It sounded great, but cost way too much in my opinion. Beside I have a TEAC Bookcase stereo on my tool box at work.

Seems like a decent, mid-level pair of bookshelf speakers would be a much better choice. the distortion in the bass frequencies would be an absolute deal breaker for me, at ANY volume. the absolute lack of high frequencies, and overall muddiness of the sound, (even considering you mentioning that it sounds better in the room than it does on video), would also be a deal breaker. i imagine a cheap pair of computer speakers from Wal-Mart would sound better, and only cost about $10...Has Klipsch ever made a decent speaker? isn't Klipsch the speakers that are sold out of the back of those unmarked white vans? I bet the only enjoyable experience with this "speaker" was removing the protective plastic from the logo....

For a brief exhilarating moment there I thought Techmoan was reviewing a product that I actually own and regularly enjoy. Not quite though - I have the slightly more expensive (£395 new in 2020) but equally confusingly named The Three II, which looks almost identical but is larger.

I really love this speaker. I bought it mainly to listen to the music I have on my phone via Bluetooth, without any bells or whistles, and it does an admirable job. The sound is lovely and rich for the money and it handles bass fairly well (only struggling at high volume with very bassy tracks, dubstep and the like).

I'm going to buy a turntable to use with it soon as well, and it's good to know I could get something vintage without a pre-amp.

My main criticism is also the lack of tone adjustment. It's absolutely fine most of the time, but certain types of sound don't come across well, particularly natural speech. I wouldn't advise buying this speaker to listen to podcasts.

A single speaker, regardless if its made from 3 cones, is still a mono speaker. Going for a stereo (pair) of good monitors like the ones you demonstrate in this video is far superior.
Also... what the heck is going on with that bass distortion?
I have a pair of JVC monitors from Currys.. think they are about £75, they have extremely good sound to them for the money and have no bass distortion at all.
When I was choosing them, I put them up against a Bose and Sony set and tested them all. The most expensive (Bose) sounded the worst and also distorted the bass before getting loud.

They might not have a grounding peg for a record player but I'm sure a cheap mini amp would suffice to boost the signal of the record player. The total cost would still be significantly cheaper and the sound quality would be better too. (So long as the cheap amp doesn't add noise)

no... no... a single speaker with 3 drivers running in stereo is a stereo speaker, the fact that the right channel goes to the right and the left channel goes to the left makes it stereo... what you mean is a single speaker with 3 drivers is a stereo speaker with horrible stereo separation.

This is a speaker made by the same company that make high end speakers (well the logo is the same) - I remember hearing Klipsch Horn loudspeakers in the thousands of pounds range at audio shows in the 80’s & 90’s. I wondered how their cheaper stuff sounded. They have a whole heritage range from a few hundred pounds to 20,000 plus. I wonder how their headphones sound.

The bass distortion sucks. It sounded more like a bad surround or something rattling against the cone more than an amplifier clipping to me. That said, I felt it sounded much nicer than the Roth speakers at the volume it was set to in that demonstration. I'd personally care more about sound quality than lack of stereo separation and / or lack of headroom, unless it was really bad.

I wonder if the bass distortion was due to the included wall wart not putting out enough power. It may be rated to be enough for the speaker, but it may not be putting out the rated amount of power. Perhaps try a higher rated power supply and see if the bass still gets distorted?

You could connect two car batteries to this and it would still sound like shit. It's chinese junk - that circuit board is a generic one sourced from china, probably used in all sorts of other equipment as well. Just because it has a Klipsch badge on it doesn't mean it's made by them or is any good.

I have it's larger cousin the Three 2, It's great, and super powerful. I got it on sale, for about 300. It has a remote, and the preamp as well. It uses a standard pc cable for power. It also has stereo.

I have a The Three 2 too (lol), and I love it. I got it last year at full price and it was a godsend during the lockdown, I didn't have any other audio equipment at the time and this little beauty gave me many, many hours of enjoyment. It's certainly earned its keep. Looks fantastic too.

I have a feeling knowing the Klipsch name that your speaker might have been blown and that's why it's open box and was returned. I highly doubt that Klipsch would have put their name on something that sounded like that when turned up. For the most part they make fairly high-end equipment here in the US.

My main setup is a pair of Klipsch the Sixes which have a phono preamp integrated, optical input, Bluetooth and USB input. I have with it the Project Debut Carbon DC with red cartridge in Klipsch walnut edition to match the speakers. I am extremely pleased with the sound and quality and I also use the optical input with my TV and I don't feel any need for a proper home cinema. Sound is really feeling like 70's Klipsch style. Love this setup.

Watched as always listening on my VA4s I bought after seeing your review (how did I get serial no. 0003?!). Although I don't use the phono level input as my Akai bluetooth turntable is behind me, it's nice to have if I ever have a move around. Money very well spent. Klipsch is interesting but really not my thing. Thanks for the awesome content Mat.

Definitely a dizzying array of pricing and descriptions in the U.S. I've seen it listed (new) anywhere from $69 to the full $299. eBay listings were the worst in terms of description, most claiming remote and a 2200 mah rechargeable battery! Most of the eBay listings don't even mention the phono pre-amp feature, probably it's main draw over a basic bluetooth speaker.
P.S. Glad I found this vid, even w/o notification, Mat. I seriously doubt you could make a video that would "cheese" me off. 😅

@Mark Reno As someone who has acquired way too many old low-cost PC speakers, I think having a decent set or two at $15 each is well worth it. I use my budget ones when I simply need some sort of sound, I give them away to people as needed since most were given to me. But for listening to quality music without needing to fill a large room, those Klipsch speakers should handle it.

I considered buying one of these primarily because it has that late-50's look/vibe that I like. But I already have 2 or 3 speakers similar to this and each has left me disappointed. You confirmed my suspicion that it also would be disappointing.

I have a set of desktop computer speakers with separate sub from Klipsch...the much acclaimed ProMedia set. I've asked this before and I'll ask it again: Since that setup requires mains power and isn't portable, why didn't Klipsch just put those components in a single cabinet with a simple Bluetooth receiver? The ProMedia speakers sound MUCH better than any of the portable offerings from Klipsch. And they're always on sale for $100 or less. Granted, it would be physically larger than this - but it would be cheaper AND better.

Just saw one of these at a local pawnbroker in Pontiac, which is a suburb of Detroit. Looked to be in great shape but they wanted $150 USD. Now wish I had them do a volume/distortion test when they offered a demo. Thinking to find one to bluetooth connect to an Amazon Echo Show (v1), and it might even sit on top nicely.

External power supplies also save on products being UL listed in the states. Only the plug has to be listed, which the company who makes the transformer already did it. That’s why pretty much everything these days uses usb power or “wall warts.”

I have a pair of Peachtree Audio M25 powered speakers with phono input when needing a small setup solution. They sound and look great plus have a remote. My Klipsch Cornwall speakers driven by tubes are in my main system and I absolutely love them.

Correction: Paul Klipsch had his company headquarters in Hope, Arkansas, which is very close to Texarkana. also my friend's cousin, John Eargle, was a protégé of Paul Klipsch. John went on to accomplish great things in the audio engineering world. Paul Klipsch recorded some Texarkana ensembles when he was based in Hope.

My local walmarts clearanced these out a few months back for around $40. I got one and loved it until it quit working. That's right, It worked for about a month. Still working with klipsch to get it repaired/repaired. They might not do it though, since I got it so cheap.

I wouldn't put it past Walmart to do that, and it may explain why Klipsch is reluctant to honor their warranty. Which would make me weary of purchasing their brand again.

I don´t like that mid bass saturation that usually comes with small (mono) speakers. It ruins instrument placement. I prefer mono records over later stereo issues, the instruments got more punch by using a mono cartridge then, but probably on expensive gear only. I don´t like tricks to make small speakers big either, but I like room filling tricks on already large speakers like Sonab, Pfleid...
