Actually when I was in the military.. The reason the bed has like 2 foot worth of unusable space is because it was meant to be a bench seat. You'd put these fence looking things. It's also used to mount stuff onto it. Also in the uparmoured humvees if I'm remembering correctly that's where the radiators are.

Also humvees only have 1 gas tank. You just bring a crap ton of fuel cans with you.

Just an amazing vehicle, the alpha sat 2 inch higher because of the Duramax engine, new high strength steel was used in the frame, and redesigned gears in the portal axles made it quieter. Also upgraded electrical, cooling, ventilation, fuel and lower gearing made it overall much better than all the other H1s.

As far as I know, the Unimog has a tire deflation and inflation system, too. I know, it's hard to get the hands on one in the US, but it's one of the vehicles I would love to see a Doug score of. You may check the Unimog Museum in Gaggenau, Germany. People say that it's a lot of fun, but you need to book a driver training long in advance.

The dual fuel takes would also be more important in combat where you might expect one of them to be damaged. If it was simply a matter of storing extra fuel, they could have just added one large tank.

I had a 1980 F-150 with dual 24 gallon tanks. I could drive over 700 miles without refueling. Loved it because I was driving 125 miles round trip to work 6 days a week.

It’s not common any more, don’t recall seeing it since about 2010, but that’s when truck manufacturers starting giving you the option of putting 36 gallon fuel tanks instead of like 24 gallon fuel tanks, so that might be why.

My '71 Jag XJ6 4.2 also had 2 fuel tanks, one in each rear wing with it's own filler cap and dashboard L/R switch. There was a 1.5 gallon reserve on each tank, bringing the total capacity up to 24 gallons.

Haha I love your comment about the front seats because we always had to mod our military hummers to recline at the disadvantage to the rear occupants. Also notable is that safety is amazing if you hit another vehicle traveling in the same direction you can literally drive through the a dump truck full of bricks. On the other hand running into something head on, or if it flips over, some occupants will almost always die. But if you do it just right you can flip alllllllll the way over, land on the wheels, and then it kind of looks like a flying delorean from back to the future.

My boss had a Hummer Alpha that was 1 of 10 painted “Hummer Green” from my he factory.
I would follow him home from work occasionally into the hills off the beaten path but still on paved roads. It’s a really awesome sight to watch an 11,000 pound vehicle in all all wheel drive drift at wide open throttle and handling as well as my Hemi Challenger! We went to the local So Cal mountains to conquer the most difficult off road trails numerous times. This is the one time that I would have to disagree with Mr. Demuro. The Hummer Alpha handles like the champion off road beast that it is. Unfortunately my friend had to sell the Alpha and he got a a nice return on his investment.

As "bad" as owners and military vets say they are, they're still the ultimate badass machine, and I'd love to own one myself, but I guess with rising prices; I will never get to experience that type of sheer joy. :(
It will still be my favorite vehicle in the world though...

So many of my friends’ parents built these things in Northern Indiana. I remember driving past the hummer factory as a kid and seeing HUNDREDS of the civilian Hummers and military hummers side by side.

They used to test them on the old Studebaker proving ground and built a huge off-roading course.

Fun fact, there are many instances where in the military these were modified HEAVILY to fit the situation. That's likely why they are so basic and have so much "wasted" room because that gave the military guys freedom to build on top of what's already here. You can almost think of this as just a frame of what it would be in many military situations.

One example would be the gap in rear seats leaves room for the top mounted 50 cal.

Not really. Telling us there is "important running gear stuff" under the center console isn't very helpful. Deflating tires is to increase the contact patch and allow them to conform to the surface, but actually increases the likelihood of a flat.
And a military guy in the comments pointed out that the design of the bed is to allow troops to sit sideways on the back fenders.
This guy didn't do any research. He just looked at it and gave his opinion.

'06 was the only good year for the Duramax. Previous versions had their injectors underneath the valve covers, they were prone to heat and failure. 06, they fixed that, and the Duramax was a good engine that year. The next year, however, introduced all that DEF stuff which over complicated things.

My old 96 F250 had two fuel tanks. But they were only roughly 15 gallons a piece. My 2012 F250 has one fuel tank, but it's 37.5 gallons. I think the split tank design is usually there due to how they have to fit the fuel capacity they want into the design of the vehicle. For the Hummer, it may have been for the sake of switching to another fuel source if your main tank was punctured.

Just a few things that weren't covered for those interested: While Doug notes that the dual tanks were allegedly implemented for military use, they were not, at least in my experience, ever included on a HMMWV. However, all US Army tactical vehicles are required to make 300mi on a single tank, for what it's worth. Whether this range carries over to the civilian-exclusive Duramax, I couldn't tell you. Additionally, the hood lock is unique to the civilian H1, and the tailgate chains can be reconnected after opening to hold it flush with the bed surface, granting a few measly inches of extra space.

I owned a 2001 Powder Blue H1. I live near Lake Tahoe, and I was sure it would be a 9000lb sled. It was far from it. It was amazing how stable it was in snow. Since my kids ski raced, many mornings I would wake up to ice and snow from over night. In a hummer? No problem, the front windshield has electric defrost wires, just like a rear window. (Doug doesn't mention this, but at 21:22 you can see their reflection in the sun.). The most fun part of an H1, is stopping hard with a new passenger while the vehicle bounces back and forth from the portals! Freaks people out. I really miss that vehicle.

Doug, the Hummers were designed to look like the Humvee (AMC HMMWV), but they are NOT the same vehicle. The Hummers were always a consumer vehicle and not a military vehicle. GM licenced certain design elements from AMC to build the Hummers. My brother, who rode in many during his deployments, said the HMMWV were garbage and breaking down constantly. However, there is a thriving community of owners for the HMMWV if you EVER want to review one of those.

Brake caliper might also be placed like that to avoid damage to the caliper if people were shooting at the wheels? I don't think this placement has anything to do with ground clearance. Besides, the portal axle system makes it very hard to fit a good brake system at the wheels.

At 09:52 that isn’t a “secondary” sun visor. That “visor” is made to hold items such as a map 🗺 or your vehicle’s registration.

The netting is a second option to place items in such as sun/reading glasses👓 and such items.

Also a 5'4" woman designed it and was unfortunately concerned about everything else which is arguably more important but Humvees absolutely suck for riding In if you are tall I lover Hummers an H2 is one of my dream trucks/SUVs. It's not a h1 besides the leg room but I want to build an H2 myself and h1s are already pretty much well built except if you are changing the motors and transmissions out, but for my life style I don't have the time to do a project like that it's all fab. work. For an h2 it already has a solid engine that has tons of great aftermarket engine parts bolt on or for the internals. I mean don't get me wrong I love to build and fabricate with metal especially on cars I even went to school for welding/metal work. Now an H1 isn't out of my league to build but out of my timeline an H2 I can still do plenty of real fabricating like for different axles for and example which is way more time friendly than swapping a completely different engine and transmission especially a diesel one with a turbo! IMO I hate Diesels so if I did have time and were to build an H1 I would definitely be going supercharged gasser probably a big block which would probably much easier than a diesel with a turbo or turbos.

Well actually we have quite a thirst for Mercedes unimog axels in the off-road community. They are a solid axle with portals on the ends. There are a fair amount of custom portal boxes added to regular straight axles too. Most lifted trucks aren’t really lifted for the purpose of off-roading. @jordan eimer plan b supply does a great job on these. You can get a completely redone Humvee around 50k. I've thought about getting one from them. I currently own a 2003 h1 soft top with 35k miles, looks brand new and live driving it

@jordan eimer Who's DDE? Jay Leno had some of these silly kids on a recent episode. They were talking about their "design engineer" and blah, blah, blah. The kid claimed the Humvee/Hummer got its name from the humming noise that the "exotic" drop gear axle produced. I almost lost an eye, they were rolling so hard.

Dual fuel tanks also have different pick up points to allow fuel flow in off camber/ unusual attitudes.

The Humvee wouldn't have been air dropped from a helicopter, as it would be safer and simpler to just set it down where needed. They do air drop them from cargo planes, though.

Inboard brakes may be rare, but my 1970 Subaru ff-1 had them, though they were just drums.

Military Humvees feel a little roomier inside because it's way more utilitarian. It's made for carrying troops in full battle rattle, not for soccer moms on their way to book club. (Not that there's anything wrong with, just making a point about how different people need different levels of creature comforts depending on what they're doing)

Wow, totally a market for some enterprising company to do an AIO conversion for pre 2006 H1s. Package a newer DI 4.0 Turbodiesel with 440/560 or so, and supporting bits. Lot of room in the price gap for a aftermarket specialist.

about the dual sunvisors, you need to move the primary sunvisor off to the side first, then the secondary one can kick out and block some sun from the front while the primary deals with the side. Its not that rare, my 2009 ML350 has it, my mom's RX 350 has it, its just not something you would NOTICE that often.

The fuel two fuel tanks, the self inflating tires, and the muffler under the wheels are not in typical military HMMWVs. Self-inflating tires are typical of more modern military vehicles, and the muffler goes out the side, not the back on military Humvees.

15:30 It's actually 5 clearance lights, not three. You have three in the center of the vehicle and one out at each corner. As someone who owned an H1 and drove it regularly for 14 years, I take exception to your misrepresentation of the rear leg room. I did not have an H1 Alpha, but the interior dimensions changed very little if at all between model years given that the exterior body dimensions did not change at all as far as I know. The bed on the 4DHT (Four Door HardTop) is sized to hold a standard pallet, like a pallet of ammo or food or what have you. The bed is short sop there is no overhand on the rear of the vehicle which gives it such a good departure angle meaning your butt won't hang up when traversing steep obstacles or even a vertical wall. Your presumption about the bed width is incorrect. Yes, the exhaust runs through the wheelwell and it travels over the top. There is a very good reason for that, it seals the exhaust against water getting in when the vehicle is running in 3 feet of water (which its designed to do) or even when submerged. The wheelwells are so wide because you need that space for the wheel travel when traversing rough terrain. When the wheel moves up it has to go somewhere. The 6.5L NA Detroit Diesel in my 95 H1 was 185HP not 150HP. Many owners were stuffing the Duramax in their trucks years before the Alpha came out. Jim Lynch who owned a Hummer dealership in St. Louis was the first I think. I suspect the Duramax powered Alpha might not have happened if they had not already proven it could be done and made a significant improvement in performance. You should do a little research before you spew out all these inaccurate factoids. If your 95 H1 was only worth $35k it must have been bare bones. The base price on my 95 was more than that, and with all the options it was over $65k. As far as service there is no difference that I can see. The original motor, the 6.5 NA and later the 6.5L Turbo were both GM motors that were used in small trucks and pickups, so any GM dealer can service them. The tranny is the GM 4L80E and also serviced at any GM dealer or repair shop. The brakes, half shafts and the rest of the drive train are no obstacle to service either. Overall not one of your best reviews due to numerous inaccuracies in your reporting.

The H1α is the baddest truck ever made. I would love to have one of those. It's a shame they cancelled it. Now that the Great Recession is over, and everyone is buying large trucks/SUVs, they would sell. I would love to use it to drive over one of those fruity lowered Miatas with ridiculous negative camber.

To be honest, portal hubs on an axle are only worth a 💩 if the lower control/A-arm is higher than the centerline of the axle housing to portal. This is dragging its A-arms all over the place compared to a solid axle with portal hubs; the solid axle is tucked all the way up and only putting rubber on the road... where implementation is busting A-arms.
You can also buy the ctis system aftermarket for not that much... Aftermarket crawling parts.

That's why I like my FJ Cruiser, it feels familiar when I drive it. Kinda like a little Humvee, and in terms of off-road capability, better than an H1.

Er, Doug ... after spending so much time telling us that this vehicle was engineered for ground clearance, you forgot to tell us how much ground clearance it has!!!!
It looks as if there's about 2 feet of ground clearance at first sight, but it would be nice to have confirmation of the numbers :)
