Enjoy the Silence
boyle susan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand?
Oh, my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very
Unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very
Unnecessary
They can only do harm

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very

Unnecessary
They can only do harm

Overall Meaning

In "Enjoy The Silence," Boyle Susan sings about the power of silence and how sometimes words can only do more harm than good. The opening lines "Words like violence / break the silence / come crashing in / into my little world" portray how words can be hurtful and destructive. The pain caused by words is further demonstrated in the lines "Painful to me / Pierce right through me / Can't you understand? / Oh, my little girl."

The chorus "All I ever wanted / All I ever needed / Is here in my arms / Words are very / Unnecessary / They can only do harm" emphasizes that sometimes, silence is all that is needed. Despite the intensity of the feelings, vows are broken and pleasure coexists with pain. Words are trivial, meaningless, and forgettable. The power of being still and holding someone in your arms is all that matters.

This song has been interpreted in many ways. Some people think it represents the peace that can come from taking a break from technology and the constant stream of communication in today's world. Others believe it is a love song and that Boyle is telling her lover that she does not need words to show her love for them. Regardless of the interpretation, "Enjoy The Silence" is a beautiful, haunting song that captures the power of silence.

I’m a crazy fan of Depeche Mode since I’m 14 and I hate when someone covers one of their songs. Well, only Susan’s voice with her feelings and her version made me listen this gem to the very end. She feels it, she knows what she is singing about, she found the deep meaning in the lyrics and with her beautiful and astonishing voice (you hypnotise me, Susan) I enjoyed it very much. An extraordinary lady with an extraordinary song is deleightful to listen. I’d really love to see a video of her singing it, not only listen the audio. I was your fan before and you only confirm it with this. Wonderful woman!!

Likewise. Rarely is the cover "there". It's just a facsimile. I do enjoy this one, though. And, I have to admit, I quite enjoy Monster Magnet's rendition of Black Celebration. :)

I am actually sincerely surprised at this. I was always happy for Susan but I never thought I'd find myself listening to her stuff- I just didnt think it was for me. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard from her, great cover. Good for her! Hauntingly beautiful

Susan Boyle is one of the most amazing women of the 21st century music world. Not just because her singing shits on most other stars, but for the reality of a humble soul with an angelic voice whom the world mocked before her star shone. I love this lady!

I as well, William think she is the best. She can sing anything. I just love and admire her so.
