Lost in space
c. kent Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Billions of stars, shining so bright
Planets and entities,
black holes and galaxies
Asteroids flying by, close to me
Anyone could become a tragedy
All controls are out
Rushing through it all, makes you feel kind of small
Time is running short, loosing life support
Lost in space
The first stanza sets the stage for a mesmerizing experience as the singer looks out of the window and is greeted by a breathtaking sight. The vastness of the universe unravels before them as they observe billions of stars shining brilliantly. They are not only captivated by the stars but also by the presence of planets, otherworldly beings, black holes, and galaxies. This celestial spectacle evokes a sense of wonder and awe at the enormity and complexity of the cosmos.
In the second stanza, the lyrics take a darker turn. The singer notices asteroids, small rocky bodies hurtling past them. These asteroids pose a threat as anyone could easily become a tragedy if they were to collide with one. The feeling of danger and vulnerability is heightened as the controls of their spacecraft malfunction, rendering any attempts to regain control futile. In the face of this impending catastrophe, shouting or panicking would be meaningless and ineffective.
The third stanza furthers the sense of urgency and peril. The singer describes a rush, an acceleration through the vastness of space. This speed and movement make them feel insignificant and small in comparison to the vastness of the universe. Time is depicted as running out, implying a limited amount of both literal and metaphorical life support. This could suggest that they are physically running out of resources necessary for survival, or that their emotional and mental stability is deteriorating under the immense pressure of being lost in space.
The phrase "lost in space" in the final line of the song encapsulates the overall theme. It conveys a feeling of being adrift, directionless, and disconnected from the familiar and grounded. It represents a state of being lost in the vastness of the universe, surrounded by unknown and potentially dangerous elements. This sentiment echoes the human experience of feeling small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, struggling to find one's place and purpose in the vastness of existence.

This was also the point in the program when the local television station airing a show, in this case Lost in Space, would announce their call letters and station number. In Pittsburgh, PA Lost in Space aired on KDKA Channel 2 during its entire run.
