Fool
connie smith Lyrics

Nobody but a fool would love you after the way you've done me
Broke every vow you made me, broke every rule
Who'd lie awake all night, cryin' 'til you were out of sight
Loving you with all of her might, nobody but a fool

I don't know what it was that made me trust you like I did
Stars got in my eyes or either rocks got in my head
All I knew was your two lips kissed me heavenly
'Til yesterday those tender lips kissed goodbye to me

Nobody but a fool would love you after the way you've done me
Broke every vow you made me, broke every rule
Who'd lie awake all night, cryin' 'til you were out of sight
Loving you with all of her might, nobody but a fool

Well, people tried to tell me how you'd hurt me, I suppose
But I was blind as any bat and deaf as any post
You caught me like a tiger, I loved you like a lamb
And knowing I still do just shows me up for what I am

Nobody but a fool would love you after the way you've done me
Broke every vow you made me, broke every rule
Who'd lie awake all night, cryin' 'til you were out of sight
Loving you with all of her might, nobody but a fool

Nobody but a fool
Nobody but a fool

Overall Meaning

In Connie Smith’s song “I’d Rather Be a Fool,” the singer admits that she is labeled a “fool” for loving someone so much, but declares that she would rather be thought of as a fool than to be without her beloved. The song captures the tension between societal expectations and personal desire. The chorus suggests that others may see her as a fool for not being able to see the reality and foolishness of her love, but the singer stands by her feelings and choices.

The repetition of the word “fool” throughout the song adds to its emotional impact by reinforcing the central message: love may make us look foolish to others but it is worth it when we find someone who makes us feel truly happy and fulfilled. The song is a poignant reminder that love can make us vulnerable, and our vulnerability can be seen as foolish by those who do not understand the depth of our emotions.

You never fail to surprise me with so many songs you have recorded. You have done a wonderful version of "Fool # 1. And I thought Brenda Lee was the only one to sing it. It just goes to show that with a bit of research and for getting to know the nuts and bolts of singers and the way they use their talents. For the love of country music, I'm following in my mother's footsteps to improve my methods of singing country music. My mother who is only with me in spirit now became an beautiful singer because she observed her favorite singers, like Connie Smith, Brenda Lee, Connie Frances, Patsy Cline etc., and found her own style unique to other singer her age. I am so grateful to be able to carve out a pathway unique to my style of singing, appreciating and loving the same singers that my mother enjoyed. Love Barbara
