The Last Emperor
d. byrne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see the shapes, I remember from maps
I see the shoreline, I see the whitecaps
A baseball diamond, nice weather down there
I see the school and the houses where the kids are
Places to park by the factories and buildings
Restaurants and bar for later in the evening

Then we come to the farmlands, and the undeveloped areas
And I have learned, how these things work together
I see the parkway that passes through them all
And I have learned how to look at these things and I say

I wouldn't live there if you paid me
I wouldn't live like that, no Siree
I wouldn't do the things the way those people do
I wouldn't live there if you paid me to

I guess it's healthy, I guess the air is clean
I guess those people have fun with their neighbors and friends
Look at that kitchen and all of that food
Look at them eat it, I guess it tastes real good

They grow it in those farmlands
Then they bring it to the stores
They put it in the car trunk
And they bring it back home and I say

I wouldn't live there if you paid me
I wouldn't live like that, no Siree
I wouldn't do the things the way those people do
I wouldn't live there if you paid me to

I'm tired of looking out the windows of the airplane
I am tired of traveling, I want to be somewhere

It's not even worth talking
About those people down there

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of David Byrne’s “The Last Emperor” speak to the experience of air travel and observing different areas of land and the people who inhabit them, and the singer’s thoughts and opinions on them. As the airplane passes over various areas, Byrne describes what he sees - landmarks, housing, factories and buildings, restaurants and bars, the parkway, farmlands, and undeveloped areas. He notes that he has learned how these places and things work together, but also how he would never live in those areas or do things the way the people do. Despite acknowledging the clean air and the fun the people seem to be having with their friends and neighbors, the singer has a strong aversion towards living in these areas or engaging in the same behaviors as the people he observes.

The song may be interpreted as a commentary on class differences and the disconnect between different groups of people. The singer’s perception of the people in the areas he observes is colored by his own biases and prejudices. He is an outsider, looking in from above, with little understanding of the lives and experiences of the people he sees. The song may also speak to a sense of ennui or dissatisfaction with the singer’s own life, and a desire to be somewhere else, although the lyrics suggest that the singer doesn’t even deem it worthwhile to talk about “those people down there.”
