Comfortably Numb
david bowie and nine inch nails Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home?

Come on, now
I hear you're feeling down
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again

Relax
I need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'
When I was a child, I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

I have become comfortably numb

Ok
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more (aaaaaahhhhh!)
But you may feel a little sick

Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working. good
That'll keep you going for the show
Come on it's time to go

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now

The child is grown, the dream is gone
And I have become comfortably numb

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Comfortably Numb by David Bowie and David Gilmour, lead guitarist of Pink Floyd, are about a man feeling disconnected from the world and, as a result, numb. He asks if there is anyone else there and if they can hear him, suggesting he is feeling lonely and searching for a connection with someone. He offers to ease someone's pain and get them back on their feet again, essentially offering to help and be there for them.

However, the man then asks for information first and asks if he can be shown where it hurts. This suggests he is looking for tangible signs of pain or discomfort, and needs specifics to be able to help. The next verse suggests the man is experiencing a disassociation from reality, saying he is receding and only coming through in waves. This could be interpreted as a result of medication, addiction or depression.

The last verse suggests the man is reminiscing about his childhood and a time when he caught a fleeting glimpse of something he couldn't explain. This has since gone - perhaps as a result of feeling numb and disconnected from the world. The song ends with the man accepting his numbness and becoming comfortably numb.

The way that Bowie steps back several steps after his verses, puts his hands behind his back and lowers his head when Gilmour steps forward is pure class. Two British legends, two amazing voices.
