The Divide
esO Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to fail the slightest test,
I'd make mistakes just for effect a living joke.
And now this world seems so hell bent,
I'm drawing blood to pay the rent, and I just smile.

I give in, can you hear me.
Maybe I am every bit as soft as you,
Maybe I am every bit as lost as you.

Thank God we're not the same.
Thank God we're not the same.

Uneasy confidence is best,
When no one wants to face the stress,
A sleight of hand and bare faced lies,
It holds together am I surprised, I can't tell.

Don't give in, can you hear me.
Maybe I am every bit as deep as you,
Maybe I am every bit as weak as you.

Thank God we're not the same (Acting like you own me, tell it like you know about me)
Thank God we're not the same (Tell it like you know me, telling me what's best for me)
Thank God we're not the same (Acting like you own me, tell it like you know about me)
Thank God we're not the same. (What have you done lately tell me who I'm supposed to be)

It's OK we're not the same.

It's OK we're not the same.
It's OK we're not the same.

Overall Meaning

"The Divide" by esO is a powerful song about self-realization and acceptance. The first verse relates to the singer's past where they used to make mistakes and turn themselves into a joke just for entertainment. However, the world has changed, and the singer is now faced with struggles such as paying bills, which they do not take lightly. Despite it all, the singer is able to smile and find comfort in this state of turmoil. The second verse touches on the idea that being confident in a deceitful way can hold things together, bringing a sense of security even if it is temporary. However, the singer urges not to give in to this false sense of confidence.

The chorus states "Thank God we're not the same," which appears to be directed towards those who feel as though they know the singer well enough to tell them how to live their life. The repetition of "Acting like you own me, tell it like you know me, telling me what's best for me, what have you done lately tell me who I'm supposed to be," emphasizes the singer's frustration with such people. However, towards the end of the chorus, the singer shifts the tone, suggesting that it is okay not to be the same as everyone else.

Ever since I heard this song years ago, something always pulls be back every once in a while. It's such a deceptively simple song, while actually having a lot of depth in the lyrics and melody. I don't think I'll ever get tired of coming back to this one. It has a sense of nostalgia within it that is so addictive.
