WOLF
first aid kid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wolf mother, where you been?
You look so worn, so thin,
You're a taker, devils maker
Let me hear you sing,
Hey ya he ya

Wolf Father, at the door
You don't smile any more
You're a drifter, shape shifter,
now let me see you run
Hey ya hey ya

Holy night, oh guard the night
Oh keep the spirits strong
Watch her grow, child of woe,
Oh keep holding on

When I ran through the deep dark forest,
long after this begun,
When the sun would set, the trees were dead,
and the rivers were none,
And I hoped for a trace to lead me back home from this place,
but there was no sound, it was only me, and my disgrace

Hey hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey ya

Wolf mother, where you been?
You look so worn, so thin,
You're a taker, devils maker
Let me hear you sing,
Hey ya he ya

Wayward winds, the voice that sings
of a, forgotten land,
See it fall, oh child of woe, oh lend a mending hand
When I ran through the deep dark forest,
long after this begun,

When the sun would set, the trees were dead,
and the rivers were none,
And I hoped for a trace to lead me back home from this place,
but there was no sound, it was only me, and my disgrace
Hey hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey hey

Hey hey hey, hey hey
Hey hey hey, hey ya

Overall Meaning

The song "Wolf" by First Aid Kit is a haunting and powerful exploration of grief and loss. The lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways, but many listeners believe that the song is about a woman who has lost a child or a loved one. In the first verse, the singer addresses the "wolf mother" and "wolf father" - these are most likely metaphorical references to the mother and father of the child who has passed away.

The wolf mother is described as looking "so worn, so thin" and as a "taker, devil's maker". This could be interpreted as the singer's anger and frustration at the loss of the child - she may feel that fate or some external force has taken the child away without any reason or justification. The wolf father is described as a "drifter, shape shifter" who no longer smiles - this could be interpreted as the father's struggle to cope with the loss of the child.

The chorus of the song ("Holy night, oh guard the night, oh keep the spirits strong, watch her grow, child of woe, oh keep holding on") could be interpreted as the singer's plea to whatever force is out there to protect the child's spirit and to help the singer through the grief.

Overall, "Wolf" is a powerful and emotional song that speaks to the universal experience of loss and grief. The lyrics are poetic and ambiguous enough to allow for multiple interpretations, but the emotion behind the song is universal and relatable.

Every other year or so I stumble upon a song and it goes like this...

I listen to it for the first time and it catches my attention. There's something special there: a groove, a rhythm, a note that makes my ears go a-ha!
I listen to it for the second time and the a-ha becomes a wow! There's clearly something gripping me.
Then I listen to the song for a third time and I am suddenly overcome with emotion. The lyrics hit home. The melody sweeps me off my feet. I read into it an intensity that I can't control.

The third time happened this morning as I was making breakfast. By the time the song got to "Where the sun would set, trees were dead and the rivers were none" tears were streaming uncontrollably down my cheeks. My children came down for breakfast and I couldn't stop hugging them all the while covering my face so they wouldn't have to see that their dad was crying for no reason.

There's a magic feeling of wild, of loss, of death and resilience in this song. Where did it all come from? How did you make up words as beautiful as "the rivers were none"? Where is the wolf now?
