In January 2016, Nayoung, Sejeong and Mina were introduced as Jellyfish Entertainment's first female trainees on the Mnet survival show Produce 101 where 101 female trainees from various companies competed to debut in an 11-member girl group that would promote for a year under YMC Entertainment. After placing, respectively, 2nd and 9th in the final episode, Sejeong and Mina eventually debuted as members of I.O.I in May 2016.
Despite denying earlier reports about Sejeong and Mina debuting in a seven-member girl group in June, the company confirmed on June 7 that the two would debut within the month in what would be the company's first girl group. Nayoung was also confirmed as a member on June 10. On June 13, the company revealed that gugudan would be a nine-member group. On June 22, the group confirmed that they were going for a mermaid concept. On June 28, they debuted with their first mini-album Act.1 The Little Mermaid and title track "Wonderland".
On February 3, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that gugudan would make their first comeback since debut with their second mini-album, on February 28. To build anticipation, Jellyfish revealed that a track on the album had been written by labelmate VIXX's Ravi. On the same day, Jellyfish revealed that the concept of the album was narcissism; based off the tale of the Greek hunter Narcissus. On February 24, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that the release of the album was changed to February 27. gugudan released their second mini-album Act.2 Narcissus and its title track "나 같은 애 (A Girl Like Me)" on February 27, 2017. The extended play debuted at #3 on the Gaon Album Chart.
On October 25, it was confirmed that gugudan would be releasing their first single album in November. The concept for their upcoming comeback was inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. On November 8, 2017, gugudan released their first single album Act. 3 Chococo Factory. Member Soyee was absent from this comeback due to a shoulder injury. The album's title track was "Chococo".
On January 9, 2018, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that gugudan would make their first comeback of the year on January 31. It was also revealed that member Soyee would be part of the promotions for the album. The single album was to be called Act.4 Cait Sith, and is presumably based off the Final Fantasy character of the same name. The single album was teased with an acapella version and a short dance video featuring member Hyeyeon. After being delayed, the music video for the title track "The Boots" was released on February 1.
On October 25, 2018, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that Hyeyeon would be leaving the group to focus on her health and studies. Around the same time, they announced preparations for gugudan's third mini-album, with an intention to show a new side of gugudan with an Ocean's 8 themed concept. On November 7, gugudan released Act.5 New Action along with title track "Not That Type". The mini-album contained six tracks, including "너에게 (Dear)", written by Sejeong, and "Do it", produced by labelmate VIXX's Ravi.
SUBUNITS:
On August 10, 2017, members Mina and Hyeyeon formed a subunit called OGUOGU (Hangul: 구구단 오구오구) and released their first single ICE CHU.
In June 2018, Jellyfish Entertainment released a mysterious teaser only suggesting the initials S, M, and N. Later that month, they revealed gugudan's second subunit to be comprised of members Sejeong, Nayoung, and Mina. The subunit was named SEMINA (Hangul: 구구단 세미나). They released their first single SEMINA on July 10, 2018. The single consisted of two tracks: "샘이나 (Semina)" and "Ruby Heart".
