Practically every Urban environment is a sun down town or let’s say don’t break down town. Just stay away if you don’t look a certain way
Now when your familiar with either landscape neither are overtly terrifying as promoted traditionally. The world is crazy so the rules may have been rewritten recently.
Fear of the unknown is a powerful tool and one of the best ways to keep trouble out of one’s neighborhood along with teaching subconscious lessons.

Middle America 🇺🇸 may look at some funny and be overtly candid and mistrustful of strangers usually for good reasons that most seem unaware but one will not have to deal with the perils of the more densely populated areas statistically.

Evil comes like a thief in the night it can take any form.

Excellent expose of what was going on, here in Pennsylvania. My interest is in the Jim Crow segregation of South Western Pennsylvania. I grew up during the 1950's, and distinctly remember two swimming pools in Highland Park, the two pools and separate picnic facilities in South Park. I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video, especially South Park. WAMO'S Black DJ's always held dances at the South Park Barn, I remember Porky Chedwick holding his teen dances at the White Elephant in White Oak, a suburb of Pittsburgh appropriately named. The segregation and struggle was real then, has it improved in 2022?
There can be another video on segregational gentrification, what immediately comes to mind is the destruction of the Lower Hill District for The now defunct Civic Arena, the creation of reservations such as Northview Heights, Arlington Heights, and St. Clair Village.

I grew up in Allegheny Co (north) Pittsburgh around the same time. We always had our elementary school picnics at West View Amusement Park. I distinctly remember that there were separate water fountains for white and "colored" and I had to ask what that meant. This was in the mid-late 50's and I think went into the early 60's.

My mom let me know that during Jim crow the only major department stores that didn't treat black people badly was Macy's and gambles that's why she always loved Macy's because she could shop with a t least a modicum of dignity!!!!!

My father worked in the Steel Mills. I never knew the intense conditions he worked in. He's now 94. I'm gonna ask him about it. I remember Mrs. Barbara Calloway and I can now appreciate going to Fairview Park with my church Rodman when I thought we should go to my neighborhood park Mellon or Highland Parks.

If he is like my dad, he would not talk about his childhood, young years as a growing man nor manhood, he worked hard janitorial, handyman, window washer. The only thing I could get him to talk about was entering the Army, and how he met my mother. He was an old man by the time he even told us about a sibling who died being hit by a branch when traveling in a wagon.

Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh had a massive swimming pool, built in the 1920's, which was Jim Crow. In the early 1970's the courts order the pool integrated. Instead of integrating the pool, Kennywood removed it and it became a parking lot.

Ya know I’m 58 years old and I remember walking from the patch to sallys pool. Walking down the street right by piney fork beach. White folks only… mineral beach, white folks only… we’d get to Sally’s and have a ball!!! The Barn was next to it but I was too young to hang out there. That was for my parents. It a black club of sorts I guess. I was way young to really understand what was going on just that this is where we went and that was where they went. Sometimes we rent a pavilion to have a barbecue. My dad would be grilling and my mom would keep an eye on us while we played. Didn’t dare wonder off to other pavilions where white folks had their outing…our neighborhood was black. A little area we called the patch. Til we move when I was around 12 then the racism went in to full blown. This video is so true of Pennsylvania. The place I’m talking about is call South Park. South of Pittsburgh. I often wondered why white folks thought they were a level above everyone else? Today I’m very much awake. It took a very long time for me to realize we are at war. And with that I’ll stop here. This channel isn’t a place for where I would take this comment. I thank you for posting this all the same.

In many cases they did all they could to try and keep us from improving life in our own neighborhoods. That's one of the reasons why some left. Some as my grandfather felt had the right to travel,live, breathe and be any damn where they wanted. This is just as much our land, if not more than most of those folks.

They offered them $500,000?? (did some research) Value of $500,000 from 1951 to 2022
$500,000 in 1951 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $5,559,788.46 today.

I would have took the money and left for 2 reasons. 1) I would have made one hell of a return on my investment. (which was the house.) 2) life and peace of mind is more important than being looked at as the first black people in a white neighborhood. As a child growing up, being taught about race relations in public school, I never understood why black people are so in love with white society. My teacher would teach us about Martin Luther King, and I would say to myself he is crazy. ( was like 8 or 9 at the time)

We knew all too well about the REGIME that was in place with (as we called them) “The Rollers” with their black leather coats and boots that would stomp a mud hole in your ass. Sometimes on horseback in West Philly. Our parents made sure we knew about their tactics before we could venture into town, as young adults. The “talk” about how to conduct yourself wasn’t for our police, but strictly for Philly Police.
