People of color are still being treated as they were in the past and when we point to that out to show you how (because many of you don't seem to understand) you want to claim that we are living in the past. No, it's you who is still living in the past, because you whine about every little thing people do to push away from the past especially when it comes to economics. Black people can't even walk down the street without some white person harassing them or calling the police and saying that Black person looks suspicious. John Crawford was murdered by the police because he picked up a toy gun in Walmart. Many Blacks have had the police called on them for trying to go home and some white person calls the police and says they are breaking in their own house! Your comment is questionable about who is actually living in the past. You don't want to give up your privilege that you had in the past in Jim Crow America. That's what the problem is, and you don't want to admit it. Stop stoking the fear and the lies through your history. You can not move forward by burying truth in history, because you keep repeating your sad history by not remedying it. People who are not white are no longer going to bow to white supremacy no matter what you want to call it and you just need to get the point already.

I had always thought that the segregation laws "jim crow" were named after some county commissioner who started the written laws that other jurisdictions copied. Thanks for the informative video.

Jim crow was explained to me like this. Jim was a typical name of a black man during the latter years of slavery and after slavery. A crow is a scary black bird. And you have to admit during those times a black person had a lot to be scared of such as citywide genocide and lynching. Black men would be locked up for vagrancy and sent to coal mines of Birmingham Alabama or cotton fields in Mississippi. Worked to death on railroads being built. Sundown towns.

Since so much hate is steeped in ignorance, your efforts to educate must be applauded. As a young child, I was uncomfortable with the dissonance between what was said and what I observed. I learned more from people, especially observation, and books than in actual school. When I was ten, I read a book titled Black Like Me. Many think this was just in the south but I was born in southern California which doesn't have such things happen, but they did.

This period of our history is SHAMEFUL... In no way can we allow this stupidity to continue. People are individuals and need to be considered individually on their actions. I say this as a conservative and one that is disgusted with treating people other than as individuals and pursuant to their personal actions. “I was taught better...”. In my opinion, that’s the key. We learn what we’re taught and we act accordingly. The only way racism and prejudice will be subdued is if each generation is taught that we’re all created equal so that eventually, the majority of us will treat each other as equals. I wasn't taught a lot on black history in my formative school years, however, when I got into college, I took a black history course and learned so much. Black history needs to be taught in all schools of the United States, it's a part of our history no matter how ugly and painful its past is. Without history, you are doomed to repeat the past, which is what's happening now.

I’d heard the term beforehand, but never understood its meaning or connotations and was always curious when hearing American politicians referring to ‘ Jim Crow’ law. This has clarified everything for me, for which I would like to thank you sincerely. This derogatory practice and reference has to stop. People are people no matter what their race, religion, creed or nationality and it is important to recognise this, learn from the past and hope for the future. With that in mind Human nature is what it and sadly racism will never be completely stamped out, but with continual education, we can all have a damn good try.🙏

Thank you for sharing this and I have subscribed. I can remember watching The Black and White Minstrel Show in the UK as a child. It is amazing how long this continued. When it no longer aired, in my innocence and ignorance I recall asking my mother why the show wasn't on any more and she simply told me that it was actually disrespectful and rude to people who were black.

What an interesting and thought provoking video. The background images were very challenging, I wish the script text was not on them as it was a distraction, but I imagine the text is invaluable to the hearing impaired.

Being Anglo-Australian the background to the expression ‘Jim Crow’ was unknown to me. However, about 25 years ago, I was seconded for a year to the US, where, at that time, there was only one employee who was black and he was rising up the ranks at great speed. The other members of his department would refer to him as ‘Jim’ or ‘Jimmy’. I did wonder if there was a maliciousness behind the name. I asked him several times why they called him by that name, but his response was “It doesn’t matter, please don’t make a fuss about it”. Back then, the internet was not as readily available and I did not have the cultural background to explore the meaning behind calling him Jim. So sadly I didn’t act, and the experience went into the recesses of memory and it’s only because of recent events in US politics that the memory has been recalled. Well this particular ‘Jim’ had the last laugh, he rose to the top of our profession and became an internationally renowned expert.

Thanks for watching! Based on my research, it’s called a crowbar because the original design resembled a crow’s beak and/or crows’ beaks were considered to very strong. As far as “jimmy” goes, Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “to force (something such as a lock, door, or window) open with a metal bar or a similar tool. 🤓

In 1945, at 17, I went to Ft. McClellan, Ala. for Army basic training. I was shocked and horrified at the segregation I observed. Even in the Army. Never was taught or knew about such discrimination. Hopelessness has an effect on people. I hope the process of change for the better will be handled well by all sides.

Interesting stuff. There were lots of contradictions during the Jim Crow era. You could live on the western side of a northern state as a kid and know nothing about the Jim Crow unwritten rules, and then travel to the eastern part of the state and see colored only drinking fountains and segregated schools. Later, (and I think this might have been due to political considerations and coalitions) the rules gradually flipflopped and the eastern part seemed more enlightened than the western part. That's how it looked to me anyway.

Yes I have experiences as a white child in the deep South. I was very small, maybe 3 at the time I traveled w/ my great aunt to visit relatives. Her daughter and snl drove us in their car. But we came back by train just she and I. We arrived at a depot as the cotton wagons had just pulled up and she explained that is what went into making clothing. When we walked inside, she told me to sit on one of the long benches. When she came back from I guess the ticket booth, the laborers had come inside and sat all around me. She told me I couldn't sit there I would have to move. I said why I like this seat. But I obeyed. I knew the word 'color' written out because of coloring books. I asked her about that writing over a door. She said that is where they go to the bathroom. That other door is where you go to the bathroom.

I learnt about Jim crow in the UK when I saw a drama king, in 1979. When I watched Roots the next generation(which was shown and premiered on BBC1)in the autumn of 1979, I became even more aware of Jim crow, which as a black girl aged 12 upset me.

I’m from GenX & am CONSTANTLY amazed (distressed?) when I here people from generations before & after mine, who claim they were never taught about this, and many of the issues currently being discussed today that seem to contribute to racial divide (ex: Juneteenth, widespread commitment to stop slavery throughout the US - evidenced by well documented actions, speeches & historical buildings with hidden rooms that supported the Underground Railroad, and so much more). The actions/results from civil unrest in the mid 60’s most likely impacted what my generation was taught in school (whether we learned from our “school board approved textbook”, or from the special assignments that usually included a deeper-dive into something our textbooks didn’t cover).

I do wonder how much information people actually learned in school, but simply forgot vs. how much has been left out of school curriculums across the country?

Lastly, could the shift our country’s focus from the humanities to STEM be the reason we all seem to be creeping closer toward that slippery slope which allows us to stop learning from our past (human) history, because we’re too focused on getting the latest, brightest, new techno-gadget?

You raise some very interesting points. I think overall, there’s a feeling of “that’s behind us” or “that’s the past.” After all, some say, we elected a Black president! It could be that some aren’t realizing that moving past an issue isn’t the same as resolving it. Racism never went away. We moved past it and made it so that it’s not overt and publicly accepted. Because we never dealt with any of the root causal factors, racism simply became a covert operation.

Your thoughts on the shift to STEM are interesting.

As far as whether or not the history was not taught or taught but forgotten, I mentioned this in another comment thread - When I used to be a teacher, February would roll around and at one school I taught at parents would write the teachers and say that they didn’t want their child to be subjected to any Black history content. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to watch the video. I also really appreciate you adding value to the content by sharing your thoughts. 🤓

I was raised in the south in 50's and 60's. Jim Crow wasn't talk in school and some parents didn't talk about JC unless they owned their own land. I was raised on 100 acres of land, my dad attended NCA&T in Greensboro, NC to be a farmer. He raised the whitest cotton, biggest, sweetest melons, sweet potatoes, corn and wons ribbons at the county fair in September.We were talk what we did and didnot do when we went uptown. We didnot go to the backdoor of the one restaurant in town or order food from what is now called fast food where u had to pay and order you food through a small window. As kids we were talk to look a person in the eye when talking to them, a strong handshake, respect elders and to keep your word. My dad died of a heart attact when I was 10yes old. As i got older i understood why he died so young. Jim Crow in control. He would have a truckload of cotton, corn, peppers melons to name a few. He would figure up what to expect from the market and when he total up it would be mych less than what he figured. He would have to take it or feed it to the animals or let it go bad. I learned that stress will kill you dead. He was known and respected in the community but Jim Crow was still in charge. We had it good in the state we were in compared to many and went through what blacks in the deep south went through. "Decendants of Jim Crow still live today and making laws that effect decendants of the blacks of the 1900's

I first realized I was black in1962 while traveling by train from Ohio to rural Georgia to visit grandma. We stopped in Tennessee, disembarked for refreshments and to stretch. My own mama like to tore my head off when I nearly took a sip from a ‘whites only’ water fountain. The fountain I was to drink from was around back. One look at that filthy fountain, let’s just say, I was no longer thirsty. I’ll never forget it... I was 5.

Believe it , or not, I too, had the VERY SAME experience. 1967, downtown Pittsburgh, two fountains, one each, on either side of the station. I can't describe the condition of the, "colored", water fountain, let's just say, it was unfit, to drink from. As the water touched my lips, the ENTIRE train station, SCREAMED, HEY, GET AWAY FROM THERE!! What are you doing? Seven year old me, said, getting a drink of water, I'm thirsty. "You can't drink from that fountain, use the one over there". Needless to say, I was no longer, thirsty. It is now, 2021, I can NOW, DRINK from the same fountain as THEM, but, the AIR, still REEKS, with racism!!!! As you learn about OUR history, TEACH, OUR history. Pass it on, so that, OUR next generation, WON'T have to find out, TOO late!!✌🏽

A similar experience happened when we travel from Lansing Michigan, on a train, and then we transfer to a Trailways bus when we got to Texarkana... but before we got to Texarkana, while we were on the train, we could not eat and the dining car with other people, we ate from a paper bag and a small shoe box that had chicken and sandwiches in it... I was crying because I wanted to go where all the other people were going to eat, but I did not know any better at that time... I was just a little kid... I remember crying because other little kids we're going and coming back with cake and cookies and stuff, I did not understand the racial disparities, because I was just a little kid... when we got to Texarkana and got off of the train oh, we went into a bus station, and had to wait while all the white people got served, and my mama kept telling me to just be still and wait and stop moving around so much... I remember that she said for me not to make the people mad at us and just be quiet and be still... it took me a few years to get it, and a few good books and a few good conversations about the way things were at the time... still are in a lot of ways... that devil is still around doing what they do...

It seems so strange to me when this period is referred to as "history" because I LIVED it! It really hasn't been THAT long ago, folks. I grew up in a Southern city in the South during the waning days of "Jim Crow" racial segregation during the mid to late 1950s just before the Civil Rights movement began to become strong and popular with black people. I can still remember riding in the back of the city bus practicing my newly learned reading skills by trying to sound out: "Colored in the Back of the Bus". IF any white person got on a bus that happened to be crowded and there were no seats in the front for them, the driver forced a black passenger in the back of the bus to give their seat to that white person. Believe it or not! There are other indignities black people had to endure, but I won't describe them here because the reason for my making this comment is to make people realize "Jim Crow" was real and it's legal enforcement wasn't THAT long ago. There are MILLIONS of us black Americans who lived under it and remember it well. Take care, people, and may God bless you all.😁😁

Some might wish to read "The New Jim Crow," published in 2010 by Michelle Alexander. A NY Times bestseller and winner of many awards. Effectively shows how the prison system has become the new Jim Crow. This book is considered "the bible of a social movement" by SF Chronicle. Great video...simple and clear...much appreciated.

When I was a little boy in Chicago, I heard the name Jim Crow and immediately thought of the whiskey ad whose mascot was the image of a crow with a top hat, monocle, and walking-stick under his wing. Haven’t seen that character in some years come to think of it. Can’t remember which brand of whiskey that was.

I think it boils down to the school’s location and the teachers. I used to be a teacher and the schools I taught at would cover content beyond MLK, for example. I taught in inner city schools, primarily. Many of my friends who are still teaching, don’t shy away from this content either. I get what you’re saying though. These topics aren’t mainstream.

I was never taught this in high school or college. I thought this was based on an individual. I didn't know that it was a poor piece of entertainment back then. We shouldn't need a law to know we should respect others. Hell, even the Declaration of Independence includes the words "that all men are created equal."
