Small Town Boy
m.o.d. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Digging through the earth to get out the other side
Anywhere other than this stain on the map is alright
Not running away, but trying anywhere to find
Other people with the same sort of future in mind

I can't escape, I cannot wait

Chasing the sunrise, for miles and miles
On a tired old train
Watching the moon go down
Through a picture frame

Listen how still it is
Even wind has died
Can't rain on you if you
Can see the sunrise

Every day starts the same
Starts with hope
And every night, all the nights
Comes back alone

So just wait one more day
One day, to your surprise
One day won't be alone
When you watch the sunrise

Chasing and running away at the same time
Jumping ship but not holding on to a line
One more falls off this spinning wheel
Another steps on and more are hot on their heels

Digging through the earth to get out the other side
Anywhere other than this stain on the map is alright

Not running away, but trying anywhere to find
Other people with the same sort of future in mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of M.O.D.’s song “Small Town Boy” speaks of a young individual who feels trapped in a small town and wants to escape to pursue a different lifestyle. The song describes the feeling of being stuck in a place where they do not belong and the desperation to leave for anywhere but this “stain on the map.” The singer is not running away from anything but searching for the right place to fit in, where there are people with the same aspirations as him.

The first stanza talks about the singer’s determination to get away from his hometown. He feels the need to dig himself out of the earth to escape and get to the other side, anywhere other than where he currently resides. He is in search of people who also have the same kind of future in their minds. Despite the difficulty in escaping, the singer knows that he cannot wait to get to where he belongs.

The second stanza talks about how the singer chases the sunrise on his journey to find his place in the world. He is travelling miles and miles on a train, and as he watches the moon go down, the stillness of the night is captured in a "picture frame." Even the wind has “died” and nothing can rain on him as he tries to find the sunrise. Every day starts with hope for him, but every night brings him back alone. However, he knows that he has to wait one more day, and eventually, he will find the place where he belongs, and that one day he won’t have to watch the sunrise alone.

Yea man, this album is simple but thats what makes it so great. The riffs are catchy, the subject matter is funny and Billy’s singing with the talking thrown in at the right moments is perfection…Anyway, the late 80s was great for albums..reign in blood, peace sells, masters of puppets, Apetiete for destruction among the living, so far so good, south of heaven…..and the coming of Alice and nirvana. Great time for my
