Sayin' we'll never do that again
Don't know why you're getting all in your head
'Cause we decided we were just gon' be friends
Just friends
Just friends
Don't want to feel stuck, that'd just make it worse
Just want to be with you when you're on my mind
But I don't want love, that's a waste of my time
We're just friends
Just friends
I want you here
But I don't want the strings attached
'Cause I don't know how long we'll last
I want you here
I just like having you around
But I don't want to be held down
'Cause you and I
We're just friends
We're just friends
We're in your bed, just skin on skin
Sayin' we'll never do that again
Don't know why you're getting all in your head
'Cause we decided we were just gon' be friends
We're just friends
We're just friends
Just friends
The lyrics to Olivia O'Brien's song "Just Friends" present a complicated situation between two people who are physically intimate but cannot commit to a romantic relationship. The singer describes being in a bed with someone, with skin touching skin, and acknowledging that they have made a decision to only be friends. The chorus emphasizes this point, repeating "we're just friends" multiple times.
The second verse expands upon this theme, with the singer expressing a fear of getting hurt and feeling trapped in a romantic relationship. She states that she only wants to be with the other person when they're on her mind, but does not want to waste her time with love. The chorus repeats again, emphasizing the point that this is a purely platonic relationship.
The bridge of the song summarizes the singer's ambivalence towards the relationship. She wants the other person to be around and enjoy physical intimacy, but does not want to be tied down or committed. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing once again that the two are just friends.
In summary, Olivia O'Brien's "Just Friends" is a song about two people who are physically intimate but cannot commit to a romantic relationship. The singer is ambivalent about the situation, wanting the other person around but not wanting to feel trapped or hurt. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes that the relationship is purely platonic.
