Hailing from … Read Full Bio ↴Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth is a rap group from the 1990s.
Hailing from "Money Earnin'" Mount Vernon, New York, this DJ-MC duo first made noise in the rap world on the 1991 EP, All Souled Out. It sold moderately well enough to justify Elektra Records clearing the way for 1992's Mecca & the Soul Brother LP.
As a producer, DJ Pete Rock (Peter Phillips) tended to prefer obscure soul and jazz sides for sample sources, frequently making use of horn-driven hooks. Lead vocalist C.L. Smooth (Corey Penn) tended to be philosophical in his raps, and he mostly avoided profanity. Their signature hit was “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”, a dirge for fallen friends, specifically, Troy "Trouble T-Roy" Dixon, a dancer for fellow Mount Vernon, New York rapper and cousin of Pete Rock, Heavy D. (Dwight Myers).
1994's The Main Ingredient was the follow up, and they appeared on a string of guest appearances for remixes, soundtracks, and other works. Public Enemy, EPMD, Heavy D and Johnny Gill were among the artists they collaborated with, and they can also claim credit for producing (and performing on) Run-DMC’s 1993 comeback single 'Down with the King'. Despite all this, the duo failed to go gold on any of their own releases.
Separating in 1995 (shortly after a well-received Sprite TV commercial), they eventually reunited on a handful of cuts from Pete Rock’s solo recordings: Soul Survivor (1998), PeteStrumentals (2001) and Soul Survivor II (2004). They also went on a brief reunion tour as a warm up for their then-anticipated new album, which ended with a show at London's famous Jazz Cafe. Despite these intermittent collaborations, the pair has exchanged dismissive comments toward each other in separate interviews, disavowing plans for a full-fledged reunion.
Their compilation, The Best of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth: Good Life, was released on Elektra in 2003.

Through an umbrella that you gave
There were just two shadows swaying in the rain
Feeling happy with you while that time
That was just occasional, people say
But I think that's unconvincing
What a shameless gesture or laugh
Only pleasant memories go through memories
I'm sorry that I don't want your heart to be taken by anyone
You just like a twinkling star
Light up the way and shining me from somewhere
When I get lonely I will call your name
Even we've separated and chosen a different way
You've released your hand and went far away
Only the tears cannot be stopped
When I try to forget all about you
Your face recalled unnecessarily in my mind
I'm laughing even now, even with those sad memories
Have you thrown away the pure feeling
that we used to wish two of us forever
You just like a faraway star
Light up the way and shining me from somewhere
I really wanna forget you but...
Can you call my name again just like before
You just like a twinkling star
Light up the way and shining me from somewhere
When I get lonely I will call your name
Even we've separated and chosen a different way
Just like that day once more,
Shine me ........""
The lyrics of "Shine On Me" by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth describe a past romantic relationship that the singer remembers fondly, despite its end. The song opens with the memory of meeting the person on a rainy day, where the only connection they had was the umbrella that the person gave to the singer. The memory is a happy one, and the singer reflects on the impact this person had on their life. Although others may brush off the encounter as occasional, the singer truly believes it was a meaningful moment.
The chorus mentions the person being like a twinkling star, lighting up the singer's path and shining from somewhere. Even though they are no longer together and have chosen different paths, the singer still thinks of this person when they get lonely and wishes to hear their name once again. The singer cannot forget about their former partner and wonders if they have been able to let go of their pure feelings for each other.
In the final verse, the singer recalls the pain they felt when their former partner left and how they cannot stop the tears. Even though they try to forget, the memory of their ex-lover stays with them. They ask if the person can call their name once again to alleviate their loneliness, just like the day they first met.
Overall, the song is a melancholic reflection on a past relationship and the lasting impact that the person had on the singer's life. It is a reminder that even though things may come to an end, the memories of love and connection can still shine bright in our lives.
