Dequantes Lamar first considered a career in professional baseball, but in 2008, the Atlanta native issued the single "Stay Down" featuring the Stack Money Boyz. Things came to a halt when he landed in jail for a year on burglary charges, but upon his release in 2011, Quan began to make up for lost time. Hooking up with the Atlanta crew Loyalty Ova Royalties and becoming quick friends with member CEO Teezy came next, but Teezy's untimely death later in the year put a stop to Quan's planned mixtape debut. He would re-emerge a year later on the Think It's a Game label and release the mixtapes I Go in on Every Song plus Still Goin In. The year 2013 began with a tour opening for Trinidad James, along with a guest appearance on Gucci Mane's Trap House 3 album. In the summer, Quan issued the infectious club track "Type of Way," which cracked the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also became a member of Rich Gang, and co-headlined the 2014 mixtape Tha Tour, Part 1 with Birdman and Young Thug. The tape received widespread acclaim, and the non-album single "Lifestyle" reached number 16 on the Hot 100. Quan released the track "Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)" in 2015, and it became his biggest solo hit, reaching number 26.
Rich Homie Quan continued releasing mixtapes, and in 2016 he landed a record deal with Motown. March 2017 saw the release of the single "Replay," which appeared on the Back to the Basics mixtape. Led by the singles "Change" and "34," his debut album, Rich as in Spirit, arrived in March 2018, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard 200. He then put out the EP The Gif, and Coma followed in 2019. Quan resumed releasing solo material in 2021, with the singles "Daily Bread" and "To Be Worried." His EP Family & Mula appeared in 2022. ~ David Jeffries & Paul Simpson, Rovi

Forgive me
You know what Iβ²m saying?
Not for the mistakes
But for who I am, I know I fucked up and cannot bring it back
Thank the Lord for where I'm at because I came up with no cash
They went from bando to the bondos, you would think Iβ²m moving crack
Every day that I wake up a nigga never ever scared
I thank God when I wake up 'cause a nigga could've been dead
Like a certified barber, I got money on your head
Hey listen
Money under the mattress, chopper under my bed
Tyler Perry, yβ²all acting, yβ²all niggas be playin'
I stopped fucking with the packages, too many of yβ²all feds
I know I gotta die anyway, big ol' trust fund for my kids
I need some ear plugs for my ears (Why Quan?)
These niggas ainβ²t talking 'bout shit, these days, for real
Canβ²t trust these niggas just like eBay, no deal
House so big on a hill
Couch in the room where I live, I heard your girl got skills
With her mouth and her tongue, yeah, but I can't judge her
I ain't like others, girl (Baby Iβ²m different)
Show me whereβ²s your heart, I'll give you everything, donβ²t creep on me
Had to wake they ass up, at first they would sleep on me
But for who I am, I know I fucked up and cannot bring it back
Thank the Lord for where I'm at because I came up with no cash
They went from bando to the bondos, you would think Iβ²m moving crack
I got dineros, I got hundros in this dummy-ass Louis bag
Every day that I wake up a nigga never ever scared
I thank God when I wake up 'cause a nigga couldβ²ve been dead
Like a certified barber, I got money on your head
Hey listen
Now I'm back like I left something
I ain't left nothing but my head in between her legs (Ugh), Quan nasty
Give it to me, I ainβ²t askinβ², for the pussy I'm an addict
I canβ²t hear what you saying like a jail call, too much static
Treat the bitch like a throwaway 'cause you know the lil hoe trashy
She telling me she wanna go away, but she know a young nigga ainβ²t havin' it
S I T H, I swear my [?]
She grew up with no father figure, thatβ²s why she call me Daddy
She ain't worried 'bout a lame nigga, he a has been
She swearing that she bad, nigga, bitch you average
I ainβ²t tryinβ² to share ya if I can't have ya
I shoot you in your face before I back stab ya
Hm, hold on, wait
But for who I am, I know I fucked up and cannot bring it back
Thank the Lord for where Iβ²m at because I came up with no cash
They went from bando to the bondos, you would think I'm moving crack
I got dineros, I got hundros in this dummy-ass Louis bag

The song "Who I Am" by Rich Homie Quan reflects the rapper's self-realization and growth. He addresses a woman, admitting that he has made mistakes but seeking her forgiveness not for what he has done but for who he is as a person. He acknowledges that he has messed up and cannot change the past, but he thanks God for where he is today because he had no money before. He refers to his previous struggles and compares himself to those who moved from "bando to bondos," implying that he was once involved in illegal activities. However, now he carries money in a Louis bag and is not afraid of anyone.
In the second verse, Quan talks about his lifestyle and the people around him. He talks about having cash under his mattress and a chopper under his bed, referring to his security measures to protect himself from danger. He also mentions that he has a trust fund for his children, indicating that he has started planning for his future. Quan says that he can't trust anyone these days and that his success and possessions have made him a target. He mentions that he's different from other men and that he will give his all to the right woman. Quan concludes the song by reminding his listeners that he is aware of his faults and that he is grateful for his current position.
Overall, "Who I Am" represents Rich Homie Quan's self-reflection on his life and his current state of being. He acknowledges his past wrongdoings and carries himself as someone who has grown and matured. The song is not only a personal account of his journey but also a message to people who may have made similar mistakes in their lives.
