Mongo Santamaría, all'anagrafe Ramón Santamaría Rodríguez è morto a Miami, Florida, all'età di 85 anni.

Herbie was asked to play his song Watermelon Man by Donald Byrd for Mongo at a show that was dead. Mango heard it and got on stage and started playing congos to it, bass player got on stage and glanced at Herbie left hand and played a bass line. The people from the show started to hit the dance floor. Afterwards Mongo asked Herbie can her record it which he said yes. This was in Herbie Hancocks autobiography. A great song as well as a great story. Good music is timeless.

Do you have your facts straight,if i remember Herbie in an interview explained how this song came to life. You should check it for sure.

@@TheIridium6 Moshae is right. Herbie tells this story in his series for MasterClass. He uses the anecdote to illustrate how there are infinite approaches to any one song.
