Sunday
spinanes the Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You could never turn me off
Just turn me upside down
When push comes to shove
I knew you'll be around to help me
Put it down

Funny papers I'm picking up things you let fall
I've got an answer let's listen to it all comes down
Forgotten
Feigning

But you know how far away we are

You caught me looking as you were catch as catch can
Caught you spinning on himself in the pretty night
Giving into this

But you know how far away we are

Overall Meaning

In "Sunday," Spinanes' vocalist, Rebecca Gates, sings about a complicated relationship that seems to have reached a stalemate. The first two lines - "You could never turn me off, just turn me upside down" - could be interpreted as the singer saying that they are constantly affected by their partner, even when they try to resist it. The line "When push comes to shove, I knew you'd be around to help me put it down" suggests that there is a sense of dependency. The phrase "put it down" could refer to either ending an argument or settling a dispute.

As the song progresses, Gates sings about finding "funny papers" and "picking up things" that her partner has dropped. These could be literal items, but could also symbolize overlooked details or issues in the relationship that have been ignored. The line "I've got an answer, let's listen to it all come down" implies that the singer is ready to address these issues and come to a resolution.

The chorus - "Forgotten, feigning / But you know how far away we are" - suggests that there has been some sort of rift in the relationship, where one or both parties have been neglectful or pretending everything is okay. The final lines - "Caught you spinning on himself in the pretty night / Giving into this / But you know how far away we are" - imply that despite moments of connection or intimacy, there is still a distance between the two parties.

Man, I forgot how much I loved Rebecca & The Spinanes. Had such a crush on her & her music back in college days.

@jackbart1960

Wow!!!  Was a super fan in the day. Scott Plouf (sp?) went on to Built to Spill and have no idea what Rebecca Gage is up to. But such a unique sound. Fit the times so well.

Rebecca Gates* released one solo E.P. and one album as 'Rebecca Gates & The consortium'. She's still performing on a very regular basis. I believe she did a Spinanes concert during the weekend (or somewhere last week) to celebrate Merge's 30th anniversary.
