The Avant Gardener's line-up was initially Russell Murch (vocals, guitar), Martin Saunders (guitar), Nigel Rae (bass), and Mike Kelly (drums). Their first release was a self-titled EP on Virgin Records in 1977, after which they split up. Two tracks from the EP were included on Virgin's new wave showcase compilation Guillotine. Murch reformed the band in 1980 as The Avant Gardeners, with new musicians Mike Roberts (guitar) and Rob Hill (bass), along with a series of guest drummers. More popular in continental Europe than their home country, the new line-up released two albums, 1980's Dig It and 1984's The Church of the Inner Cosmos on the Italian Appaloosa label, and a 7-inch EP, before again splitting.

Has the murmuring sound of may
All silver bells, coral shells, carousels
And the laughter of children at play
Say Emily, Emily, Emily
And we fade to a marvelous view
Two lovers alone and out of sight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see Emily, Emily
(and we fade to a marvelous view)
Two lovers alone and out of sight
Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see Emily, Emily
Too
The song "Emily" by Avant Gardeners is a poetic and imaginative tribute to the name Emily. The lyrics describe Emily as having "the murmuring sound of May," which suggests qualities of beauty, warmth, and freshness. The reference to "silver bells, coral shells, carousels" adds a whimsical and dreamy quality to the description of Emily.
The chorus of the song repeats the name Emily and introduces the idea of fading into a marvelous view. This view is described as two lovers alone and out of sight, seeing images in the firelight.
