In 1990 Usher joined an R&B local quintet called the NuBeginnings, which was organized by local music svengali, Darryl Wheeler and then he decided to pursue a career in music. Aside from recording, Usher has ventured into business. He has established his own record label, US Records, and is a part owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise. He has also dabbled in acting, with a recurring role on the teen sitcom Moesha, and roles in the films The Faculty (1998, with Josh Harnett) She's All That (1999, with Freddie Prinze, Jr.) and Texas Rangers (2001, with Ashton Kutcher).

There's so many things that I want to do
I promise you when I'm ready
That I'll spend my life with you
What is love? Is it steady?
'Cause I don't know what to do
So tell me girl, are you ready?
One day we could be together
'Cause you know that I want to be down, baby
But right now we can all forget it
You know I gots to get around
I don't have much money (don't have no money)
I can't buy a diamond ring (can't buy a diamond ring)
I'm ain't tryin' to be funny
It's only a sexual thing (only a sexual thing)
Can you get with it?

The song "Can U Get Wit It" by Usher is about a man who wants to pursue a sexual relationship with a woman he is attracted to. He expresses his desires and asks if she is willing to engage in the same behavior. He talks about taking their time with one another and not wishing to rush things, but also notes that their time is valuable and any hesitation on her end may cause him to move on. The lyrics show that he has limited financial resources, so he cannot shower her with the material things that some people believe to be important in relationships.
The chorus repeats the central question of whether or not the woman is willing to engage in a physical relationship with him. He assures her that it will be enjoyable and that she will be satisfied with the experience. The bridge features the voice of DeVante Swing, a founding member of Jodeci who produced this track. He echoes Usher's sentiment and asks the woman if she can "get with it."
