The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

All that's known
In History, in Science
Overthrown
At school, at home, by blind men
You doubt them,
And soon they bark and hound you
All they say
Is “Trust in what is written”
Wars are made
And somehow that is wisdom
Thought is suspect
And money is their idol
And nothing is okay unless it's scripted in their Bible
But I know
There's so much more to find
Just in looking through myself, and not at them
Still, I know
To trust my own true mind
And to say there's a way through this
On I go
To wonder and to learning
Name the stars and know their dark returning
I'm calling
To know the world's true yearning
The hunger that a child feels for everything they're shown
You watch me
Just watch me
I'm calling
And one day all will know
You watch me
Just watch me
I'm calling
And one day all will know
The lyrics of "That's All" by Melchior are deep and introspective. They talk about doubting the things we are taught in school and at home, and how authority figures often dismiss our doubts and criticize us for questioning what they preach. Instead of blindly trusting in what is written, Melchior encourages us to explore our own minds, to wonder and to learn, to question the world's true yearning, and to follow our own paths to discovery.
Musically, "That's All" can be interpreted by artists across a range of genres. A folk singer might add an acoustic guitar and harmonica to emphasize the song's introspective, contemplative vibe, while a rock band might go for a full, electric sound to highlight the song's more defiant, rebellious notes. A rapper might incorporate a beat to add energy and momentum to the lyrics, while a soul singer could emphasize the song's emotional depth and power.
A pop artist, on the other hand, might add a catchy chorus to make the song more accessible to listeners, while an experimental musician might use electronic or ambient sounds to create a more ethereal and otherworldly atmosphere. Whatever the genre or style, the powerful message of "That's All" will resonate with anyone who has ever questioned the conventional wisdom and struggled to find meaning and purpose in life.
