He sometimes displays the hushy gravel of a Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs) and sometimes the authoratative swagger of a Johnny Cash, but always a deep baritone that floats melodically through the reverby darkness of hip, 80's-reminiscent grooves. A modernized, ante-upping of INXS, The Smiths, R.E.M, Simple Minds, The Church etc. Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face comes to mind" as well as hints of U2.
Lyrically strong, and deliciously melancholy, Max X elicits images and stories that bare the beauty in the sadness, the hope in the despair and the strength in the struggle.
The title track "Ride In Your Eyes" is certainly the most radio friendly with it's infectiously driving, "How Soon Is Now" guitar. But be sure to listen to the words of "Pink Champagne", a songwriting truimph that will make you chuckle with it's irony and, perhaps, mist up with it's heart. "I Been Sold" is bitingly melancholy Leonard Cohen with it's smart lyrics, frenetic rhymes and haunting refrain. "Singin' In The Rain" is a catchy chorused, slightly political, deep-voiced, humorous rap. "Mental Haze" is a mesh of The Church and U2.
