Doomed by the Living Dead
Mercyful Fate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm back again, back in the evil night
And you're waiting, doomed by the living dead
Flames are rising, can't you see you're dying

The wolves are howlin', a baby's cry in the distance
Cold winds blowing in the dead of night
Flames are rising, can't you see you're dying

No way to survive this evil night, if the dead won't leave you alone
So just say goodbye to all your holy angels, you're gonna die

Long black hair, face like a dead, I am here, Satan in my head

You can't see nothing but confusing mirrors
Now you feel it, it's getting nearer
Flames are rising, can't you see you're dying

So dark in your mind, breath of Satan in my back
I can't help you, cause I'm one of the dead
Flames are rising, can't you see you're dying

No way to survive this evil night, if the dead won't leave you alone
So just say goodbye to all your fuckin' angels.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mercyful Fate's song "Doomed By The Living Dead" depict a terrifying and surreal encounter with the undead. The singer is back in the midst of an "evil night" and encounters a helpless victim who is "waiting, doomed by the living dead." The imagery is vivid and intense, depicting flames rising and the howling of wolves in the background. The music is dark and brooding, with heavy guitar riffs and eerie vocal melodies that contribute to the overall sense of doom and horror.

The lyrics also suggest that there is no escape from the terror that the singer is experiencing. In fact, the dead seem to be closing in on them, making it impossible to survive the night. The singer is also presented as being in league with Satan, with the lyrics describing his face as being "like a dead" and his hair as being "long and black." This adds to the sense of demonic possession and malevolence that permeates the song.

Overall, "Doomed By The Living Dead" is a chilling and intense song that explores themes of horror and dread. The lyrics are expertly crafted to create a sense of looming terror, and the music perfectly complements the mood of the lyrics. It is no wonder that Mercyful Fate is considered one of the seminal bands in the genre of heavy metal.

on A Dangerous Meeting

Hi Chris, There were 2 interviews in particular which suggested this. (Unfortunately both the references below have since been taken down so the links below are broken)

Firstly in an interview with Loudwire, King Diamond discussed the inspiration behind "A Dangerous Meeting" and stated, "It's a song about a meeting that happened in Denmark, where I'm from, with some people who were into the darker side of things. They had a lot of things with them that I didn't want to have anything to do with. They had skulls, and there was a snake there, and all kinds of stuff that really freaked me out."

Secondly in an interview with Metal Hammer, King Diamond stated that the lyrics to "A Dangerous Meeting" were based on his personal experiences, saying, "I have seen things that are unexplainable, and there's no way that science can prove some of the things that I have seen. It's just unexplainable. It's a very, very small percentage of the population that gets to see these things, and it's been with me since I was a child."

on A Dangerous Meeting

I'd like to request a fact check on the above information.
"The lyrics to "A Dangerous Meeting" are based on King Diamond's experiences with the occult and paranormal."

King Diamond has actually said that the songs he wrote for Mercyful Fate are myths and legends, and that if anything the stuff he's written is more based on folktales and myths and that King Diamond the band is more based on personal experiences with the occult (though there are exceptions like Nightmare)
