Named after Stephen King's world-famous novel, 'The Shining', The New Shining was established in 2006 by brothers Xander ('Nax') and Vincent ('Vince') Stok. Bassist Arjan 'R' Nijman completed the line-up, which underwent one change over the years: Vince Stok left the band in 2012, Roel van der Sluis replaced him. As of 2011, guitarist Evert Zeevalkink is the band's extra guitarist on an 'on and off' basis.
The band's first couple of studio albums (2008's Supernatural Showdown and 2009's Hedges Against The Night) had a disappointing commercial performance, but did draw the attention of Dutch rock legends, Golden Earring. The New Shining toured as Golden Earring's support-act for three full years (2009-2011).
The album, Stripped/Full Circle (2012) consisted of acoustic interpretations of songs from the first two albums. The third studio album, Wake Up Your Dreams, was much more succesful than the first two, hitting #25 in the Dutch album charts.
That same year, however, the band decided to go on 'indefinite hiatus', mainly due to a rough period Nax Stok was going through in his private life. Depression, mental health and attempted suicide are recurring themes in Stok's lyrics... and for a reason.
After six years of radio silence The New Shining resurrected in 2019, recording and releasing the album Elephant, on which Nax Stok opens up about his problems: they are a part of his life, but he has more or less come to terms with them and sings deeply personal tales about them.
