He released his eponymous debut album in March 2011 on his own label 100 Thousand Records. Written, arranged and produced by Brian, it was recorded almost entirely in his home studio in Falkirk. A collection of 9 heartfelt, emotional and uplifting songs, it tracks his journey and love of music, announcing a fresh and strong new voice on the Scottish independent music scene.
Brian’s journey and love of music started when he was only 6 years old when he got his first keyboard. Spending most of his youth behind the keyboard learning his favourite songs, when he wasn’t playing music, he was listening. By the time Brian got to high school, he was learning piano, drums and guitar. At 13, he was working every Saturday in a music shop selling keyboards, pianos and guitars.
“I remember everyday after school, instead of getting on the bus home, I would walk the 3 miles up hill so I could listen to music and go into my own world. It was my favourite part of the day. I eventually stopped getting the bus in the mornings too so I could walk down to school and squeeze every minute I could with my music”
As the school bus passed him, he was in a world of his own falling in love with bands that shaped his school years, The Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, The Verve, Radiohead and many more.
At 16 Brian left home to study music at Perth College. Camping out at the college studios for 4 years completing his degree, it wasn’t long before Brian wrote and recorded his first full song. That song was called ‘Passing By’. Inspired by bullying at school, Passing By is a heartfelt plea for people to think before judging people.
“When I wrote and recorded Passing By, I knew I had to do an album. I see the world through music, and I communicate to the world through music, and the journey to A Hundred Thousand Welcomes had already started.”
In 2001 Brian finished his degree and was leaving college when his career took yet another turn. Runrig were looking for a new keyboard player. Expecting nothing more than a good days experience Brian went for the audition and was booked for a six-week tour launching their new album, The Stamping Ground. Within a year, Brian was a full time member of the band, moving from being behind the keyboards to taking the lead vocals for In Search of Angels. Brian then co-wrote And the Accordions Played for the latest studio album Everything You See and also returned to lead vocals for Something’s’ Got to Give.
In a 10-year career with the band, Brian has played on stages and festivals all over the world from Times Square in New York, to the Hebridean Celtic Festival in Stornoway.
In July 2009 Brian started the recording sessions for A Hundred Thousand Welcomes. Working with Alyn Cosker (Drums) and Ross Hamilton (Bass) the foundations of the album were laid down. Recording string arrangements with a 9-piece string section, and playing the rest of the instruments himself the album was finally complete in March 2011.
