The band, out of North Royalton, OH, was formed through the collaboration of lead vocalist and guitarist Joel Pendery, 22 and Rhythm guitarist Nic Prellwitz, 21. The name Brannigan Dastardly started as a joke between Nic and Joel. It never was supposed to be a serious name, but when their original name, Royce, was already taken, they decided to use Brannigan Dastardly because of its mysterious and somewhat mischievous connotations. The name describes the band mates, two friends who just like to have fun, play good music and sometimes be a little foolhardy. Although the name comes off as very rough and tough, both band members are very self-conscious and protective of their music.
Although the name is new, Nic and Joel have been playing together since 2001. They lived on the same street through high school and began to play at each other's houses. Both were just learning their musical craft, and admittedly wrote some "pretty bad songs." Using only a single microphone and some archaic recording equipment, they began to record original songs, and haven't stopped since.
Their music crossed several genres as their own musical tastes changed until Brannigan Dastardly was created. The band was heavily influenced by the Mars Volta, Radiohead, Casino, and Simon and Garfunkel. The band went through a rock phase, an experimental phase, which, they said, was "too trippy" for them, so they decided to get more real and get back to basics. Therefore, they ditched everything and went back to the basics, and back to an acoustic folk sound.
Three weeks of writing together over the summer produced a new vision and a new sound for Joel and Nic. "We have become more acoustic and melodic because of our maturing tastes and styles." Their inspiration for the music comes from many different places, but not one thing in particular. "I get into moods, and we are inspired by other music." Said Joel. "I can go two weeks without playing guitar and then write three songs in one day‚ most of the time you just have to feel it," said Nic. The members admit that a lot of the time they goof around and just play off on one another and create "synergy" within the group. Joel admits that they never really wrote together until now. "It's fun to come with an idea and see where it can go."
Brannigan Dastardly is in the process of recording its first album, titled "The Last Great Summer Romance" which is due out in mid-May. The recording process has been a challenge because Joel and Nic attend different colleges. Joel attends the Ohio State University and Nic attends Ohio University, where the recording takes place. The band has been working with Brick City Records, which is Ohio University's student-run record label.
As for the future, it is hard to say where Brannigan Dastardly's musical talents and tastes will take them. For now, listen for a sweet melodic sound that drives right to the heart and reminds of the last great summer romance.
