Polyrhythmic, raucous, electrotastic elastic art-pop songs from the death-beds of Fela Kuti, James White, Captain Beefheart, Minutemen, The Meters and Talking Heads.
They have toured with San Francisco's Origami and have played UK gigs with Cryptacize, James Chance and Les Contortions, DAT Politics, Fulborn Teversham, Orchestre Tout Puissant, Lovvers, played at Chinchillafest 2008 and loads more. Their sound is angular and scratchy post-funk from the James Chance school. It's polyrhythmic, unpredictable, joyful, exciting and catchy, mixing elements of post-punk, new-wave, no-wave, and classic funk. Richard Formby, the Leeds-based engineer whose clients have included Herman Dune has engineered Cissy's first five songs. Richard has described the band's sound as 'Captain Beefheart doing Afro-Beat'. Plan B magazine also included Cissy in their 'When We Meet' section - their regular recommended new sounds page and Leeds Student Newspaper also ran a feature on the band in their unsigned section. Cissy is Matt Woodward, Katie Moore, Gav Montgomery and Matt Dixon.

Four-piece post-punk electro party outfit Cissy have the playground fun of The Go Team and Justice juxtaposed with the sinister intricacies of Deerhoof. The band started a couple of years ago but most members had been playing around Leeds in other bands for a long time. Last year they toured Europe with Origami from San Francisco, and next April plan to record and tour with Chicago's Billy Dolan, who Cissy drummer Matt refers to as, "one of our biggest heroes and influences."
Leeds based independent label 'Stench of Muscle' currently feature Cissy's 'Ghost Ride the Whip' on their new compilation album, which is out now.
Questions answered by drummer Matt Woodward
1) Favourite venue to play in Leeds?
Brudenell Social Club, every time, above all because the staff are ace, the gigs are run well, and it's a family atmosphere. The whole thing is run from a passion for music and a desire to encourage a sense of community.
2) If your music was edible what would it taste like?
Donuts, definitely. And strong coffee. And perhaps like a good quality fruit beer.
3) Your best lyric?
We don't have any lyrics yet. We are planning to introduce lyrics into the new songs we're writing at the moment, but our current set of songs is purely instrumental. What we do is just use our instruments to mimic a voice, to write hooks and riffs that make the songs catchy, without having to have a vocal melody. Sometimes it's more of a challenge to write catchy memorable music that doesn't have a voice or lyric.
4) One song you wish you'd written?
There's too many! Probably any number of songs by Deerhoof, The B52s, Devo, The Smiths, Blondie, Five Style, Talking Heads and many more....
5) Best gig you've been to in Leeds?
Well some of the members of Cissy have been living in Leeds and playing in bands for 10 years, so we've all been to plenty of gigs. It's hard to pick one, sometimes the best gigs are in people's cellars where they live in Hyde Park and it might just be your friends' bands playing. We dont go to many really 'high profile' gigs because we're more into the DIY thing: smaller gigs, more challenging or interesting music, and cheaper admission. But I think I can speak for the band when I say that some of the best gigs we've been to include Deerhoof (any number of times they've played Leeds), Justice (at Leeds Uni), Mates of State (Cardigan Arms), any of the 6 Chinchillafests (an annual three-day festival run by the Chinchilla Collective), Les Savy Fav (120 Rats / The Packhorse), The Chinese Stars (The Packhorse), The Publicist (The Commonplace), Lightning Bolt (Brudenell Social Club), Hoover (Josephs Well), Firehose (Duchess of York), June of 44 (The Library), and Descendents (Irish Centre).
