Together, Kimbrough and Womack just click. Kimbrough’s wide-ranging abilities, sweet and reckless by turns, dovetails with Womack’s slash-and-burn style to produce a sound that is both exciting and heartfelt.
Kimbrough (2005 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year) and Womack (Two-time winner of the Nashville Scene Best Song Award) first came together in 1992 in the bis-quits, who made one impressive guitar-fest record for John Prine’s Oh-Boy! label. They discovered a musical and personal kinship that has continued to grow over the years - which is now DADDY.
While DADDY primarily tours as an acoustic duo, the full band made its official industry debut at this year's SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX with three blistering shows in one day, including an “official” showcase. Though, it was not an easy trek. Comprised of Kimbrough & Womack, and heavy-hitter A-listers John Deaderick (Dixie Chicks, Michael McDonald, Patty Griffin), Paul Griffith (one of Nashville’s most sought-after session drummers) and Dave Jacques (John Prine, Emmylou Harris), the band could not afford the trip. Armed with a lot of content, creativity and a window of time, DADDY asked their fans for help getting the band to SXSW. In return for a small donation, each fan received a limited-edition, one-of-a-kind CD package – “Live At Norm’s River Road House” - with 12 tracks from recent live recordings and other unreleased material. The campaign worked! The boys then followed-up with another exclusive limited-edition CD – “Rare & Unreleased, Vol. 1” – which they unveiled at their 2009 NSAI Tin Pan South Songwriter Festival performance to help defray the costs of the forthcoming studio album.
DADDY's new studio record - FOR A SECOND TIME – will be released June 16, 2009, just in time for Father's Day. Consistent with the band’s 2005 fan-favorite live CD - AT THE WOMEN'S CLUB - DADDY's forthcoming release is a seamless mesh of roots-rock, gospel, rockabilly and juke-joint blues. Echoes of Los Lobos and The Band's reverence for the all American musical permeate the record. FOR A SECOND TIME is a compelling studio portrait of a band that can sting and swing.
“They believe – in no particular order – in JESUS, ELVIS, and KEITH...Above all else, they believe in ROCK 'N' BY GOD ROLL in a crowded club on a payday Friday night.” – Rick Cornell, No Depression
Outside of DADDY, both Kimbrough and Womack have successful careers. In addition to his Americana Music Association Award, Will Kimbrough is one of Nashville’s most in-demand session guitarists and has toured with the likes of Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider, Kim Richey, Josh Rouse and others. Kimbrough is an accomplished producer and touring singer-songwriter himself, with songs recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Jack Ingram and Little Feat.
Published author, vlogger, podcaster, singer-songwriter, indelible live performer and Alt-Country hero, Tommy Womack is undeniably one of the most creative personalities in the music business. Womack has shared the stage with Todd Snider, Peter Case, David Olney, Marshall Chapman and many others. His songs have been recorded by Jason & The Scorchers, Dan Baird, Pat Haney, Warner Hodges and Scott Kempner. Music is just one side of Womack. He is also the author of the cult classic memoir, “Cheese Chronicles: The True Story of a Rock & Roll Band You’ve Never Heard Of.” Womack also has a second book, “The Lavender Boys & Elsie,” a fictional collection of letters documenting the Civil War’s only all-gay Confederate regiment, grisly murders at home, a well-accessorized Christmas show and the real reason for Pickett’s Charge.
