Born July 31, 1988, at an early age he found himself to be in the heart of the hip hop scene in Brooklyn, NY. With his big brother as a guide, he was turned on to some of the best artists in the early 1990s. “I remember one time my brother came home with Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s autograph cause he was around the corner from our place and my mom made him throw it away cause it said the word bastard on it.” That was just one of the experiences that was close at hand but with turmoil wrecking the family, his mom decided to move her and the kids to Denver, Colorado to get a fresh start and better lifestyle for her family. Knowing anyone wouldn’t want to leave home his mom told everyone that they were going to Disney World to avoid three screaming kids but getting off the bus, everyone realized it was not in fact, Disney World. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains their family was placed in the Boulder County Safe House for safety precautions.
Now living in Colorado, Decan grew up and lived his life the only way he knew how. Surviving on only his beliefs God and love he tackled every road block that was placed in front of him that being with the law, girls, family, and life. Overwhelmed with how things started becoming he wanted to get his feelings out in a way that expressed how hurt he really had become. Writing poems and limericks in his free time is what kept him sane. It wasn’t until meeting fellow Broomfield High School student Jamar Kimbrough that he tried writing a song to a beat. “Believe me. it was HORRIBLE,” is how he describes his first recorded song. But Jamar wouldn’t give up. He soon took Decan under his wing and taught him everything he needed to know about hip hop. As every student does he began to follow his own path and tell his own story with his mentor guiding his every step.
Together Decan and J LyrikaL plotted for seven years a scheme to somehow make an impact in not only hip hop but peoples lives all over the world. Now feeling as if they are in some sort of position to broaden their horizons they have opened the doors to their minds for the world to see. “2010 is going to be a really good year for J and I, because we are making a lot of music not only with each other but are trying to network with other unknown Colorado acts because we really do think if we all band together we can make the difference we are trying to accomplish. We have this idea of a Mile High Hip Hop Music Festival at Red Rocks were it focuses on the elements of hip hop but in more of a local aspect. What I mean by this is, we have Colorado’s own Dj’s, Emcees, Dancers, Graffiti artists, come out and put on a show, with a big name or two to draw in the crowd but really to showcase what we all really work hard for here because a lot of us go unknown and it sucks.”
Weeks before releasing his first EP entitled Backpackrs Delight, Decan feels confident that his music will not only sound great but people will actually want to go out of their way to listen to it. Knowing that he will be judged is something he looks forward too because as an artist some would say he doesn’t know where he stands. Whether its traditional hip hop you hear such as Jay z, Ludacris, Eminem, or alternative such as Shwayze, The Knux, and Kid Cudi, he finds himself to be right in the middle as someone bridging it all together. “ I love that J lets me do what I want with my music and he doesn’t look down on me in anyway because he is unlike anyone I have EVER heard. When he doesn’t like something he is not afraid to hurt my feelings but when I impress him, I impress myself.”
With his single Fight On, on the itunes music charts Decan is slowly getting slept on but he doesn’t mind the everyday person lifestyle. He knows not to take anything for granted because of the trails and tribulations he has faced. Everything that has ever happened to him will be displayed and shown through his music because he only writes down things of personal experience. He feels as if nothing is to personal and that through his music people all over the world will be able to relate to the joy that we call life.
