Henry Lee
Dick Justice Lyrics

Get down, get down, little Henry Lee
And stay all night with me
You won't find a girl in this damn world
That will compare with me
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

I can't get down and I won't get down
And stay all night with thee
For the girl I have in that merry green land
I love far better than thee
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

She leaned herself against a fence
Just for a kiss or two
And with a little pen-knife held in her hand
She plugged him through and through
And the wind did roar and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Come take him by his lilly-white hands
Come take him by his feet
And throw him in this deep deep well
Which is more than one hundred feet
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Lie there, lie there, little Henry Lee
Till the flesh drops from your bones
For the girl you have in that merry green land
Can wait forever for you to come home
And the wind did howl and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

This is my grandfather Dick Justice. I am so happy to know that his music has been much appreciated from all around! I'm saddened that I don't have any of his recordings personally but I truly enjoy listening to them here on YouTube. Thank you to all for the very kind words!!

Listen to the duet version of this song from PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. I didn’t know it came from DJ...

Omg. Lucky to be related to such talent.

You should be proud. His cover of Luke Jordan’s « Cocaine » is one of the strangest songs I’ve heard.

I bought the 4 albums of 'Anthology of American Folk Music' on coloured vinyl. Very happy to have it. I'm gonna upload the rest of the songs when i have the time.

Bob Dylan, when he was not even a thought in his father's head. A beatutiul song and wonderful artist. Hail West Virginia, the home of true American Folk Music....

Amazing. Found myself listening to "Love Henry" by Jolie Holland, which shocked me with the lyrical similarity of another song from a musical alchemist, Mr. Nick Cave...called "Henry Lee"....which brought me searching for the history of the song....and BAM!! Auditory pleasure from Mr. Dick Justice. Sweet interweb vortex. <3 . Still searching as it looked like Bob Dylan wrote Love Henry.....annnnnd thennnnnn saw that it is actually a traditional song called, "Young hunting" from as far back as the 18th century. *swoon

One can no doubt hear the similarities to Maybelle & Sara Carter. What a wonderful song and performance by Dick Justice from 1929.🎻
