These included hit rock and roll singles from the 50's and 60's, Show tunes, disco 8-track tapes and -of course- The Beatles. Also, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon. Even the exotic sound of Don Ho was heard coming from the garden apartment where Ian lived.
That potpourri of musical influences has created a style that can be described as melodic, dynamically rhythmic and lyrical. But Ian's songwriting philosophy is not to listen to other commercial artists too much. Ian prefers to let life experience filter through and have music be as pure and inspirational as possible, so "'many of my songs have a sound that's hard to pin down, though if you try, you can catch a hint of one artist or another in the tunes."
His performances are engaging. Whether playing to an intimate audience or a 25,000 seat theatre, he easily adapts to connect with the audience. He not only wears his heart on his sleave, he pins his lungs on his lapel and hangs his liver around his neck.
He is Currently keeping up his chops playing mainly in the East Village and around the NYC Met. area. "My music is my catharsis. It defines me. It is singular." Ian is not afraid to write and sing "my naked truth".
Ian Sklar's audiences find themselves tapping toes to titles like "Bubble" and bobbing heads with the rhythm of "Stories From My Window".
So, moving from a working class neighborhood to an artsy, intellectual area of the country has enabled Ian to "channel" either experience or combine them musically and lyrically into engaging new musical fusions.
