After landing a music publishing deal with Cheery Lane Publishing, John was fortunate to have worked as a guitarist with Ike & Tine Turner, and later for Sly Stone. With a solo career, John began to support the likes of Sly and The Family Stone and Weather Report as an opening act on tour.
Being around many musicians, John found himself around the studio more frequently, where he was asked and humbly accepted studio session work for the likes of Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Weather Report and Bob Dylan. John then began working in the studio as a session musician and engineer with American bassist, producer and record label owner, Bill Laswell where they eventually teamed up to form Subharmonic Records that released a handful of Bill’s experimental ambient, dub and electronic works.
As a producer himself, John recorded reggae/dub stars such as Sly & Robbie, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and the Heptones. On the world music side, John produced recordings for the great and late Ravi Shankar and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. John also has gained executive producer credits for Buckethead, Material and Painkiller.
Pioneering some of the early recordings of ambient and electronic music, John and his close engineering friend Logan Strand released the first self-titled LOGICAL DRIFT project in 2011. Focusing on ancient spiritual systems, psychoacoustics and aural imaging under LOGICAL DRIFT, John composes and produces electronic music elements that help to create psychological dreamscapes and aural environments that evoke spiritual responses from the listener that heighten the listeners’ sense of wellness and tranquility. Logical Drift has released five albums which have gained the support by the likes of SiriusXM Radio, Pandora, PBS, NPR, Music Choice and many other media companies worldwide. The project has also expanded into the mobile app, ZEN DEN by LOGICAL DRIFT which features music, videos and weekly inspirational quotes.
After 30 years of working on major recordings, John Matarazzo still composes and produces pop-driven projects too, with a reggae influence. John and his label, NYCMusic has launched this hybrid project to feature music and creative video content on the emerging and pro-artist crowd funding site, Patreon, while making the music available for LOGICAL DRIFT fans and new fans through the organic process of music discovery.
