Joy first stepped in front of an audience at the age of five, singing “On the Good Ship Lollipop” at a local singing recital. “As soon as I got up and sang I fell in love with entertaining, and I told everyone that I was going to be a real singer someday!” Joy recalls.
Joy soon developed an interest in writing songs as well. “I’d run around in circles in the front yard, singing and making up tunes,” she says. “Then I’d come inside and improvise little piano parts with them and record them on my cassette player. I was only five or six but I wanted to be just like Mariah Carey and Amy Grant!”
In the years that followed Joy performed in musicals, school concerts and also at local cafes. When she wasn't performing, she was practicing - spending countless hours writing songs and horning her skills on the piano and the guitar. "As soon as I’d get home from school, I’d run to my room to practice," she says. "I was a bit lonely growing up and music was the thing that kept me going, especially as a teenager."
At seventeen, Joy began music school, first briefly at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA before attending the University of Washington in Seattle where she pursued music composition as well as classical piano and voice. It was during this time that she began composing at a prolific pace. “Before music school, I sang and wrote songs, but at the UW I fell in love with classical music and orchestration and discovered that I loved composing instrumental music as well,” Joy says.
After graduation Joy formed a chamber group with some friends. The group featured Joy’s favorite instruments: cello, violin, clarinet and piano. Joy had originally formed the group to play classical music, and therefore no one was more surprised than Joy when she found herself singing and writing songs for the group to play instead. “It had been awhile since I had written a song and I had so much I was inspired to say and express,” Joy recalls. “I was excited to be writing lyrics again and I enjoyed combining my interest in songwriting with my love for classical orchestration. I especially love to write for cello. It’s my favorite!”
The first song Joy wrote and recorded was “Numb” and since the song was personal and the style was so different from anything Joy had done previously, she was worried no one would like it. “I was really nervous to show anyone my work, and when people called and said they enjoyed the song, I think I was so surprised I fell off my chair,” Joy exclaims. “All the songs I write are very personal. I can’t write a song if it doesn’t have an important meaning to me.”
Joy independently released her debut EP entitled “Scarlet” on June 22, 2010 on her own label Oscar Records, and hopes to have a full length album out early next year. “I’m having a great time writing new material right now and I can’t wait to see where it take me,” she says. “I’ll write a raw song and then I will let it sit for awhile. In that time I decide what style of music and which instruments I want to use for the final song, and how I can best color and intensify the emotion of the piece through orchestration. I love this part of the process!”
With an exciting new album coming out soon, no doubt the future will be bright for Joy Autumn. "I love writing and performing music that connects with people. I’m just so happy that I get to do something I’m so passionate about.”
