Kela Gates (born Raquel Gates) was a peruvian singer from the 60s and one o… Read Full Bio ↴Kela Gates (born Raquel Gates) was a peruvian singer from the 60s and one of the few female peruvian vocalists of the musical movement called "Nueva Ola", popular in South America during that same period. Born in the district of Rimac, Lima, in 1949, Kela showed potential acting and singing skills since she was a child, and was able to perform in several talent shows and television programs. After winning a contest, she got a record contract an launched her career in 1965 with the singles "Muñeca de Cera" and "Sigue buscando". During the next four years, she scored more hits such as "Viva el Amor!", "Tan Cerca del Cielo", "Salvemos este Amor" and "Néctar de Verano", a duo with Belking's, perhaps the most influential and famous sixties band from Peru. After a short acting experience, she quit the musical scene to stablish herself in USA. She died receantly, leaving an among of catchy pop songs and ye-ye music.
