Upon joining Nirvana, Dave Grohl spent several awkward months rooming with Cobain in a cramped, fleabag apartment in Olympia, Washington. "The whole winter Dave and I spent together in that little apartment was the most depressing time I'd had in years," Cobain told biographer, Michael Azerrad. "There wasn't a lot to do," recalled Grohl. "There was a lot of time just spent sitting in the room totally silent reading or just totally silent doing nothing, staring at the walls." To alleviate boredom, Grohl spent much of his spare time writing and recording songs. "
In the downtime between Nirvana tours, Grohl took the opportunity to cut a few of these tunes with long-time recording partner, Barrett Jones. "Over the past six years, Barrett and I had perfected our own method of recording: Start with drums, listen to playback while humming tune in head to make sure arrangement is correct, put down two or three guitar tracks - Mind you, all amplifiers and everything are ready to go before recording begins - Do bass track and move on to next songs, saving vocals for last." Besides Jones' backing vocals on 'Petrol CB,' Grohl provided all instruments and vocals.
The material caught the attention of Simple Machines' Jenny Toomey, who happened to be passing by the studio to drop off a 7-inch Jones had recently engineered on. "I don't even remember if they asked me to stay, but I did," she remembered. "I thought it was great and I hassled him for a tape. About six months later, he gave me one when I was visiting in Olympia." After some cajoling, Toomey convinced Grohl to let her release that very same tape as one of the first of eight cassettes in Simple Machines' Tool Set. "My label was releasing a series of cassettes that focused on music that was either unfinished, imperfect or finished and perfect by bands that no longer played out, like Geek, My New Boyfriend, Saturnine. It made perfect sense to ask Dave to add his solo tape to the list, and he said yes."
The cassette, entitled Pocketwatch, was duplicated from the second generation copy that Grohl gave Toomey. Four songs recorded with Geoff Turner at WGNS Studios, Washington D.C., July 27th 1991 - 'Hell's Garden,' 'Winnebago,' 'Bruce' and 'Milk' - would complete the 10-song release.
