You Lie
Maeta Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Told all my girls I wanna go back last time that you lost me
This shit is sweet, won politic, we just won controversy
I love it when you lie, you lie
Oh, you lie
Oh, you lie
Oh, you lie
I′m a nice one but I'll be whatever you like
Whatever you like

Overall Meaning

Maeta's song "You Lie" is a powerful statement about toxic relationships and how sometimes people become addicted to the lies they are told. The beginning of the song is setting the scene of a breakup - Maeta tells her friends that she won't be going back to her partner this time. She's done with the drama and with the lies. However, as the chorus repeats itself, she admits that she actually loves it when her partner lies to her. The contradictions in the lyrics represent the mental struggle someone can go through when they are in a toxic relationship. Even though Maeta knows that she should leave the person who is lying to her, she can't help but be drawn to the drama and the controversy they stir up. The line "I'm a nice one but I'll be whatever you like, whatever you like" shows that Maeta is willing to compromise her own values and personality in order to keep the relationship going.

Overall, "You Lie" is a sad reminder that sometimes people can become addicted to toxic relationships just like they can become addicted to drugs or alcohol. It's a plea for people to recognize when they are in a harmful situation and to have the strength to leave it behind.
