Four mates from neighbouring schools in Melbourne had just formed a band and to celebrate they adopted a mascot from the local pound – a beagle named Masketta. Playing fetch at the beach, an exuberant stick toss sent Masketta bounding towards the edge of a small cliff … and over. That was a Masketta Fall. Luckily, the puppy was fine and the guys got a name for their band.
We’ll get to the mangoes soon.
Masketta Fall is a classic rock n roll high school story. Jamie brought a drum kit to a 16th birthday party and was spotted by Ben playing to an Aerosmith song. Braden and Jamie were schoolmates and had already been jamming together. Moli was recruited on guitar because a) he was good and b) they figured he could be the ‘good looking one.’ Starting on a diet of Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink 182 the guys quickly started to include their own songs as well.
All four bring something to the table: their own distinct personalities and commitment to hard work. Braden, Moli, Jamie and Ben decided early on that there were no short cuts - no reality shows or Youtube hype – for them the most important thing was to get out and play. When they sold out their very first gig in Melbourne the guys knew they were onto something special.
“We met all these kids that had bought a ticket to our show,” says Ben. “They’d even made banners, which blew our minds. That was a pretty big moment for us.”
“Since then we’ve always tried to get out and meet our fans, and make new fans, whenever we can,” adds Jamie.
The hard work started to pay off pretty quickly; there have been shows with You Me At Six and American Authors, and even a spot on the Warped Tour last year.
“That was awesome, we high fived Dexter from The Offspring and hung out with Simple Plan, not something you get to do every day!” says Moli.
Now it’s getting even more hectic, with a record deal signed with Universal Music. “It’s been crazy,” says Ben. “When we got signed to Universal our celebration went for three days and included incidents that can never be repeated!”
Most importantly there’s the music. Masketta Fall’s aesthetic is fun and energetic: played like only a band that’s done the hard yards can play. This is epitomised by their brand new single ‘Summertime Girls.’
Ben explains:
‘We had a day off on the Gold Coast on one of our tours and we wanted to write a song about that whole scene. So we grabbed our guitars, bought a massive box of mangoes from some guy for 15 bucks and hit the beach. After checking things out, the inspiration for ‘Summertime Girls’ came pretty quickly. They were literally all around us!”
‘Summertime Girls’ is a perfectly crafted pop song that rolls out good time vibes without labouring the point; with just enough sting in its tail to add some extra depth. It’s the sort of tune that will attach itself to summer memories that haven’t even been made yet.
And with Masketta Fall now in full swing, there’s going to be some big times ahead.
