That was the case when Pittsburgh’s own, Robert Mauti, made his debut stage performance in front of a congregation on Pittsburgh’s West side at just the tender age of six.
At age 13, Robert made his first radio performance as a special guest for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. During his teenage years, Robert attended a music festival in the neighboring state of Ohio. That would be a defining moment in Robert’s life, as it's when he first realized he would like to have a career in music. Robert would go on to be one of only 15 promising artists invited to study at a prestigious Music Academy on the tiny island of Martha’s Vineyard. His experience there would only confirm the epiphany he experienced at the music festival in Ohio.
Robert’s passion led him to a music conference in Nashville. That particular conference specialized in discovering new talent. Robert‘s musical gift caught the ear of a music industry representative, which led to a songwriting and artist development deal for Robert.
Just two years ago, Robert made the difficult decision to give up his thriving business in Pittsburgh and move to the Music City to pursue his calling. Shortly after arriving, Robert auditioned and landed a spot with Nashville's “Soul Choir." “We have sung at prisons, women shelters, homeless shelters, as well as, a Kids for Cancer benefit. It was those concerts that helped bring focus to my music and reminded me that I wanted to make music that mattered,” says Robert.
Robert has also been able to draw from another inspiration very close to home. His parents, who are worship leaders in Pittsburgh, have also been active for years with mission work. On one particular missionary trip to Phenom Phen, Cambodia, his parents decided to take as well as give. While visiting a church orphanage, they met a five-month-old abandoned child named Daniel. The Mauti's instantly fell in love with the little boy. Soon after that trip, they returned to Cambodia to bring Daniel back to their home full of love and faith in America. As an artist, Robert is looking forward to using his platform to partner with non-profit organizations that help sponsor other disadvantaged and needy children like his little brother, Daniel.
After just one year in Nashville, Robert has finished his debut project, which was produced by two-time Dove award winning recipient, Kene Bell. Robert’s project features John Katina (lead singer for The Katinas) and Dove award winning vocal sensation, Rachel Lampa. Most of the project is co-written by Robert himself, including the track “Smile,” which was inspired by his late grandfather (also named Robert Mauti), who not only taught him his first notes on the piano, but also taught Robert the importance of smiling through every moment in life.
Robert's single, "Here in Your Presence," featuring Rachael Lampa & John Katina is currently being added to radio stations all over the nation and is being received very well. Robert recently performed on GMC's "Gospel Dream" as well, where he finished in the final 3. Along with those top honors, Robert also recently sang back up for Chris Tomlin's upcoming Christmas CD, while his song, "Loving You," was featured on CMT's popular TV show, "Can You Duet."
It’s been said that many things in life come full circle. It's only fitting that the once six-year-old singer is now hitting the road, giving interviews and sharing his music with fellow believers far and wide. Of course, he plans to make a stop in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA again very soon as well!
